Hi this is my first time posting on this forum and need advice. My wife and I are looking to become truck drivers. We have been together for a while now have spent many many hours in the same place without driving each other nuts and do work well together. Neither of us have any experience in truck driving but have spoken to several drivers and also her grandfather was a truck driver. Our desire is to drive together as a team, but do not know how to get started. We don't have the money upfront for the driving school and currently have limited resources. What I am looking for out of this forum is for genuine advice. How do we get started, which places do you all recommend for us to contact for what we want. We don't have kids, pets, house, or anything, we can travel anywhere tomorrow if need be, looking forward to your answers, thank you!

I would go over in the Company DAC section under the US Express Company. There is a man named Craig and his wife who are teaming together and are fairly new drivers. They seem to offer very sound advise.

This is Melissa from hobotruckers. When doing our research before we decided to go into the trucking industry, we found that most people recommended attending school separately, then choosing the company. I read your post and it doesn't sound like that is an option. Have you looked into State funding for re-training? I know probably 50% of our class had the state pay for their CDL training, and got to choose where they wanted to attend.

We chose to go with Watkins and Shepard simply for the fact that you attend their 10-day orientation and if all goes well, they hand you the keys to your truck and you are off on your first run. You do need to already have your CDL. We stayed with them for a year and a half and are now working for a company out of Billings, MT called Diversified Transfer and storage. We run reefer and LTL, less than a truckload.

Anne and Craig (anneandcraigleonard.wordpress.com) went to US trucking school and work for US Express. We have been talking with them since b4 they started CDL school. They are a great resource for a larger fleet company and have been teaming now for 9months.

I'm sorry I don't have any better funding sources for schooling, that sounds like your roadblock right now. If you have any other questions please feel free to drop is a line.

My husband and I are currently in a cdl school together. We chose this route because we could afford the tuition (about $2,100 each) and to take the time off (9 weeks). But in your case I would look into all the companies that offer training. A lot of the larger trucking companies do - Swift, Werner, Conway (I think) CRST (I think) JB Hunt (I think lol). I would start calling all of them and ask them all the good questions like, how many weeks is training? How much does it cost? How much do you pay? What kind of contract will I have to sign? What are your benefits? What kind of equipment do you have? You may have several companies to choose from so you want to go with the company that best fits your needs. Also, once you have a company in mind, look them up here in the message boards to see what other people have to say about them. Just keep in mind that once you sign that contract you are committed to that company until your schooling is paid off so do your research well! I do believe that if you quit before the schooling is paid off then you end up having to pay them back.
