    CDL (Your State)

I am currently stationed at Ft. Drum, NY and will be leaving the service next year. I know there are a few good schools in my area, but after my CDL School I plan to return to Texas. My question is, If I go to the School in , NY will there be any problems. I have been reading a few things, and they sound as if you must be in the state you plan to live. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I plan on ETS on June 23rd, and attend the next class I can get into.

your best to contact texas and find best thing to do
texas schools have been giving temp residences to students and been getting in trouble for it
In ILL at least you move there with a CDL you retake the whole test over even an experienced driver
    so be careful

Welcome to the board and thank you for your service!

I am almost certain if you are returning to Texas you will have to transfer your CDL back to Texas, under normal circumstances the CDL must be from home of address you claim.

I believe it varys from state to state based on agreements between them. States bordering or are close to one another usually have stronger agreements. I'm from TN and currently in school in TX. The school stated that the Fed is cracking down on residency requirements, therefore the current method is in jeopardy. The schools are continuing to lobby for a change to allow them to continue as is. They have gotten a extension until Sept. 1.

Ill. isn't the only state that requires complete retesting. As to the schools, what leg do they really have to stand on? The student-victim lives in a scary hotel for 2 or 3 weeks and either drives off in a truck or goes home with tail between legs. That's not residency.

Unless thing have chaged sence i got my CDL, When i transfered mine from MA. to NV. I had to do the general knowledge test, and that was it, but this was many years ago, but I do believe if you get your CDL or any licence for that matter, in one state and then move to another, You must transfer, but it shouldnt matter where you get your training, most school give you the basics of driving a CMV, it's up to you to practice what you've learned and how well you proform your duties in driving a CMV, Trainers can only tell you and show you how to do these things, it's up to you to retain this knowledge and practice how to prefect them

Thats some good info. So if you were in my shoes, would you play it safe and go to school where I'm going to move to? Or would you go to the better school in NY?

I would just go to school in Tejas, im sure there are accredited schools there. Getting a NY license isnt cheap. I think I paid close to $300 to transfer mine from Florida. NY is expensie with everything. I now live in NV and have to pay to have it transferred again. What a scam
