I'm looking to start a CDL Class A school to hopefully land a secure job. I've been reading up on trucking and I have so many questions but I figure the best place to start is with the training. I have a nest egg saved up so I have the capital just need to know which school yall would recommend for a rookie does anyone have past experiences with either of this schools?

I went to MTA which is now Roadmaster in San Antonio in 2000. I cannot Speak for Sage, but have heard it is ok. Road master is still run by the some of the same staff that was with MTA in 2000. The school will prepare you to pass the state CDL test. You will use one of their trucks to take the road test.I think the course is about 3-4 weeks long, and it does an adequate job of helping you get your CDL. From there, they will help you get on with a company, (they offer placement) where you will continue your training over the road with a company trainer. It worked for me, but you will still be quite "green" after those first 3-4 weeks. They are a reputable company.

I agree with JaketheBrake99.....Can't speak for Sage but I recently graduated from Roadmaster in May. Instructors are great and they do their best to help you succeed. If you are eager to learn, you should have no problem at Roadmaster. :yes2557:

One more thing...your First year or two in this biz will keep you away from home for 3-4 weeks at a time. Don't get into this if you and/or your family can't handle the separation. This is the reality of someone new to the biz. After a year or two over the road, you will have many more options like local work, but you must get the experience first. I spent my first year and a half over the road with FFE, and have been working local ever since, making much better money. You just have to "pay your dues" and gain the necessary experience .

    ShakeyJake Thanks this.

Went four weeks to Roadmaster in June. Was OK for me, but I had already taken all the written test and found a guy with a truck to let me use for the driven so I already had my CDL. Couldn't get anyone to hire me so done the school thing and then with one of the trainer companies.

I just finished my training and found I learned a lot a Roadmaster, but learned a lot more one the road with a trainer.

If you go there, and they put you driving with Robert, don't try to up shift while he is taking a sip of his morning coffee. Not a pretty sight.

Seems to me like Roadmaster wanted to get me in a class before explaining any of the financing, which left me feeling like they were hiding something.I ended up taking out a loan, and will be starting at Sage 9/22/12.I have heard (RUMOR) that Roadmaster is around $6500 with a 18% interest rate.Sage is $4255,and a 9.75% interest rate with my bank. Remember students,a big part of being a truck driver is common sense, and logical thinking.(I THINK!)

Hope that sage is better than the one in NC. Didn't think to highly of the "wonderful" instructors that I'd heard so much about. I'd suggest getting some back ground on your instructors if I were you. Texas is probably different but make sure you're trained on what's in the bible and not what some 17 year super trucker with 4 million safe miles tries to tell you. Common sense and logical thinking told me 2+2=5 when it came to that guy lol.

well, this is post number 6, only 1 more and I can PM the person I need to PM. I will be attending Sage next May when my contract is complete here in Thailand. I wish I could pay in advance because I know it will be more expensive than now. Oh well.
