I am a trucker in the UK,hoping to get my green card and move to Grand Rapids,MI later this year.
Do I need to get a B licence before I can train for an A?
Basically I wanna get the training done as quickly as possible and get some work.
I've read some of the posts on this forum and would appreciate some specific ideas of cost etc.
If I need to qualify for a B licence can I just show up and take a test for a small fee?
And yes,I do realize I'll have to learn some academic stuff first.
Can anyone recommend a good, cheap, quick training school in Michigan?

Grand Rapids.....lol, i can tell you a lot about that place...been there 44 years. I'm going to school soon myself so I can't help you much with the issues of trucking and I know nothing about working requirements as a non resident or are you a citizen already?

"Good" and "Cheap" in my experince don't usually go together...

no.. you don't need a class B. just get your class a permit and go to school. prime, swift, and central have their own schools and will pay back the school as long as you stay the required amount of time(usually a year).

There's no such thing lol. You don't want a "quick" driving school.

You'd be better off looking for a longer trucking school, maybe one of the community colleges. Obviously you know that things are done differently here. Many things to get used to especially being that you've been driving on the wrong side of the road for the last 20 years. All kidding aside though, its like the old saying about auto repairs goes....."You can have good, fast, or cheap, but you can't have all three together."

I've hauled several loads of restaurant equipment out of Savannah from some company "American" something. Went to new restaurants all over the country. Yes, I love lot lizards! -
Why Grand Rapids Michigan? Better off coming to Chicago or even Detroit. A place where you can actually find a job. Did you drive intra UK or go into mainland Europe? BTW there are many trucking schools here in Chicago that only charge $1500 for your class A CDL. Most of the new drivers from Poland and Russia go to them.

if you have experience driving a combination truck in the uk. then you might beable to skip the school and get direct employment from a trucking company. in america you don't have to go to school to get a cdl. it's nothing like the uk or europe. 95% of the people posting on these threads. have absolutely no idea what they are talking about. there just feeding people a bunch of crap they are full of. that's the other thing you need to watch out for in america. people here are so full of their own crap. it amazes me how they manage to live with there selves. any ways. good luck to you and there adventure you are starting.
