I just posted a introduction in the Welcome Wagon forum and I mentioned that I live in the Tampa Bay area. Anyway, I did a search for this specific school - CareerTech and all I saw a couple of posts about the Lakeland one but not the Tampa one, and as a matter of fact I wasn't aware of it until I did a Google search, and upon looking up the address, I realized that I used to pass it all the time on the way to work (I take a slightly different route to work nowadays to avoid traffic) and I didn't think too much of it because it is next to this swingers club (no joke) and the sign saying CDL school is hidden quite well and again forgot all about it until I found out where it was. Here is the website:

    http://www.cdlflorida.com/index.html

Anyway, I was wondering if the Tampa school is just as good as the Lakeland one - the thread is right here told me about the Lakeland school: http://www.thetruckersreport.com/tr...264-nbi-trucking-school-winter-haven-fla.html and I was curious if anyone knew anything before I call and inquire more. I know Roadmaster is nearby but I have read mostly bad things about them so I think I will avoid them.

The other thing is, I get out of them military in two years as my enlistment is up, should I try and get a CDL now or later? Would it affect me getting a job if I get it now and don't really do any driving? I know I may have to switch my license from NY to FL to get a FL CDL because I still have a NY license. Thanks for any help.

Personally, I would get the CDL now & try for a local job on days off from the Air Force. Some companies like Willis Shaw Express or Cypress(flatbed) might have some local stuff delivering or picking up loaded trailers for the OTR drivers. Might find some part time driving on Careerbuilder website & also with a rent-a-driver company that places CDL drivers with companies on short term driving jobs. Might even get some long haul runs when you take leave. Maybe Comtrak can use you to pull containers out of the ports for them on weekends or your days off. Probably need TWIC for that.

Might also get some part time work with Southeastern over around Tampa/Winterhaven working the docks and a little driving.

I looked at Cypress' website because they're affiliated with NBI, it says they only hire experienced drivers..... which puzzles me, considering NBI claims help with job placement through them,as well as about 20 other companies.

Are you going to the Tampa location? Im trying to decide if they would be a better option than roadmasters here in tampa. Roadmasters seems to have a bad reputation

Career tech is a joke . If you want to teach class and spend a ton of money go ahead. Total scam place! Dont waste your money. Go to knight or roadmaster.

They are both shady as hell but if you wanna spend 5800 bucks to teach class go for it im just being honest. They both suck. Junk trucks and idiot trainers
