missjhawk is right, get all the endorsements. Get TWIC also for those good tanker jobs. Start a list of companies you like; not the mega-starter companies.
Check these websites and decide if you want them on your list; they hire new CDL grads, ignore "experience required" on any website and apply anyway if you like the company:

    SVTN
    Howard Transportation
    Superior-Carriers
    Quality Distribution
    Maverick Transportation
    Melton Truck Lines
    Ozark Motor Lines
    Clean Harbors

Some of the best jobs for new drivers, you won't hear about in CDL school.

Eight weeks seems like a long time to attend a truck driving school. Granted you'll learn more than you will with a two week course initially, but since most companies are going to require you to retrain with them anyway you're kind of wasting your time. To each their own though...

Its Thursday, had 2 companies come by our class today, Cooper and Maverick! Cooper is a smaller truck company with about 100 trucks Maverick about 1600 trucks. The guys from Cooper brought pizza and was laid back no pushy sales pitch. Maverick was all business like a well oiled sales machine! More to come!

a lot of people over look smaller companies just because their small they go for a larger more well known company. I started out with a large company and I was just another number to them. and I got all my time with a smaller company than swift. I go into safety and the women in safety remember who you are by face. they might not remember your name right off but its cool that they recognize you just a little bit and the people in the shop do the same. because in the shop you have to go get the supplies when you come thru the yard. they only had 1 yard so if you went thru the yard it was best to hit every building. especially the one where your dm (driver manager). when I worked for cr England and swift you go into office and they were cold and uncaring. they treated u like a number. the company I signed with has about 700 trks the ladies in safety are pretty cool. but don't get me wrong there are places there that treat u like a number(payroll). from time to time you would run into the owner of the business. he would take time out and have small conversation with you. now don't get me wrong there are bad employees every where you go. but pick your first company very carefully. ask them what their CSA score is. figure out where and how u want to run. most important figure out how much you want to get paid. look at the company's turn around on new drivers. research the companies on line.
