I received some instruction and truck rental this week from Doug and Brenda in Weatherford. Which is to the west of Ft Worth and not to be confused with anything or anybody in the Dallas area. I decided to give it a try even though it was 4 hours away from home because the dps offices near Houston and Cleveland Tx have a month long wait for driving exams, and I didn't find much for truck rental-instruction around here either.

I was able to get a driving test appointment in one week at weatherford dps, although the issue is that you have to make your appointment in person only at 8am and you get an appointment for the following week. If you go in there in the afternoon you cant get an appointment because they do that first thing in the morning so you have to come back the next AM. They don't have phone personnel at that office, so you cant make the apt by phone, if you call it goes to the Austin office.

I hadn't seen a review on the Doug and Brenda rental on this site so heres the deal: I met them the morning before my dps exam and they gave me several hours of backing and parallel parking practice and on the road driving practice on the same roads the dps exam is on. Day cab and 28 ft pup trailer.

Both of them are truck drivers, Doug started with me and then Brenda took over. At first I was really messing up the parallel parking, and it ended up later at the hotel I was looking over a parking instruction sheet and I re wrote the steps and visualized it and was able to make sense of it and finally keep track of when in the process I needed to go full right, left etc. So actually I was kind of a bad student the first day, I should have done some research on the backing and parking ahead of time.

The next day before my exam I did some more parking with Brenda which helped. I was very nervous but luckily ended up that the backing and parallel park I did for the DPS examiner was the best one I ever did. The rest of the driving is very easy, just go wide enough on turns to make sure the trailer tire doesn't hit a curb. I got a few points deducted for not checking mirrors enough on the freeway. They pretty much want your head back and forth constantly.

The rental truck was real good, the air brake test was tight with no leakage, ran good and no problems. Not a show truck but its all there and everything works. Their site is http://www.cdlrentaltx.com/ .

I work for United Airlines as a mechanic so im not looking to drive full time but I needed a cdl B for a dump truck I bought to bring sand and gravel to property I own and I have an interest in maybe getting a tractor and trailer later to transport auction items that I occasionally buy and sell, for my side business stuff not for hire.

It worked out good and I got my CDL so Im happy with them and the service. Dave

There is also a truck that can be rented for CDL tests in Cleburne, TX. I don't know anything about them or what they charge, but it is usually parked next to the dps office. That is the only place that I can recall that has a truck available for taking the CDL test.

Did you have a DPS trooper or a civilian ride/test you? Most there are friendly. But they have one nice looking civilian who has a huge chip on her shoulder. Good review. Good luck.

All drivers license examiners are civilians at this time. There are several examiners at this location that gives the test.
