Finishing up the WIA process here in the next couple of days and have two choices for CDL school. Based in San Diego and the only two schools qualified for WIA are United Trucking School in Dago proper and American, about an hour north in Escondido, CA. Looking for input from folks that have actually used the schools, the more recent the better. Thanks in advance for sharing your experience.

Use United or Western Truck School (they accept WIA as well). Stay away from American (or America Truck School) in Escondido. You won't touch a trailer longer than 28 feet and they are known to use those pesky 6 speed transmissions.

Thanks. I'll check out Western. They didn't come up as WIA approved when I looked at the government web site. I visited United and they'll most likely be my choice as they're closest to home. Little concerned about 'behind-the-wheel-time' based upon feedback from some here on the forum. Thanks again.

Congratulations on your new career. Start submitting applications to trucking companies right now; it's time to do it! Don't have to wait until graduation. This way you will have a good job lined up the day you graduate.

Coastal Transport hires new CDL grads and has a terminal in San Diego. You will need tanker/hazmat endorsement and maybe TWIC card.

Navajo Express runs coast to coast and has a place in Chino. Main terminal and orientation is in Denver, CO.

Some websites have "experience required", but ignore that and do the online application anyway. Couple of new CDL grads posted they were hired by Coastal Transport recently.
Many companies are bending their own hiring requirements for quality applicants.

Any special interest in type of trucking?

Not really but thought I'd explore Tankers. From what I've read this specialty seems to best match what I'm looking for. Steady work, somewhat predictable routes and he home time.

Thanks Chinatown. I looked at Coastal Transport and they're only 15 miles from my home. Will apply there and check out these two also. The recruiter at United said many of their grads end up at Werner or Schneider. Guess they recruit heavily there. It's very strange to be venturing off into a new career at my age (my user name probably gives me away). Something I've always wanted to do so excited at the prospect. Thanks again.

Schneider Bulk (tanker division) would be OK.
If you're a military veteran, A&R Transport will probably hire you with no experience by the website information. Super good outfit.
Go tankers if at all possible; you won't regret it.
    Best wishes "youngster"...
