As long as it is a minimum of 160 hours, just go with the cheapest. They are all only going to teach you the bare minimum necessary to pass the state CDL test. Your real training starts when you get a driving job and go through your company's training program.

Stay away from all of these:
    America's Driving Force
    Daly's Truck Driving School

Do your research and find reviews. I've told everyone who has asked this question the same. Find the company you'd like to work for and ask them for recommendations. If a place that hires new drivers likes a particular school, then it's difficult to go wrong.

You might try Atlanta Truck Driving School. It's actually over in Smyrna. They'll do one-on-one time and they promise I think it's 34 hours of practice with maneuvers and driving. (Might be 42.)

Thats where I got mine from. ...and if you feel like being generous and saying I referred you then pm me. Don't let the website fool you, I won't go into details but the web page designer passed on prior to finishing it.

In and out I spent 3,300. But they offer discounts if you pay in full and I think there's also one of you obtain your learners permit on your own. (The knowledge tests.)

I would without a doubt, hands down, recommend Millis Training Institute.

You have to have your cdl permit before you go there. Their training far surpasses what you will find anywhere. All of the schools being mentioned here just train you to ba rely pass the cdl, Millis trains you to drive a truck. Once you are done with the initial three week training, you will be paired with a trainer to go over the road for more hands on training before you take your cdl road test.

I have first hand experience with Daly's and in the time I was there I only got an hour and a half road time. They actually expected me to pass my cdl road test with an hour and a half behind the wheel..... with Millis my first day on the road I trained more behind the wheel than Daly's....

All of the private cdl schools are structured the same way. First week you learn how to pass the permit test, second week you learn how to back, third week you learn road driving. At Millis you do not have the same structure because you come with the permit already in hand, and you have a much smaller class.

    I hope this helps....

Btw, Millis will only hire rookie drivers if they have gone to through their training program. Otherwise you have to have a years worth of driving under your belt, they also give us 2 weeks paid vacaton in your first year. One week after six months and a other after nine months, the second vacation is more of a first year bonus. Then after twelve months you get another weeks paid vacation......

And if you do go with Millis I would really appreciate you using me as a referral....

Millis is fine, if you want to work for Millis. Look at Chinatowns posts and look at how many of them have the word Millis in the thread. I swear he must be a recruiter for them. Their pay isn't bad but it certainly is not in the top percentage of quality carriers out there. Their home time is average at best....nothing to get excited about.

I would rather keep my options open. Go through a community college or a private school. Own your education when you walk out the door...do not lock yourself into working for just one company.

You'll be happy you went the independent route.

If you're not eligible for the hope grant, there's a special grant (I forget the name) that you're eligible for if you're unemployed. Check that out as well.

Im in agreement with everyone at this point who has said do not allow where you work for to own your debt. Most companies will pay it back over time if you self-pay, but allowing any company that you work for to own a debt of yours is a bad idea in any case.

...when they control the dice, the game is rigged in their favor.

Many drivers are in dire straits financially and don't qualify for free money for CDL school.
What are they supposed to do?

Some companies offer CDL school, lodging and 3 meals a day. Seems like a good deal for those with no other options.

Those drivers that say, "I got my CDL on my own and you can to; my family is truckers or my buddies live on farms and let me use their equipment hauling grain." Blah, blah, blah, good for them; but, that doesn't help an inner city guy from Harlem or South Chicago. There have been homeless guys and women on this forum and some trucking companies gave them CDL school, lodging, meals and all they had to do in return is agree to work for that company 12 months.

I don't get it! What's wrong with looking at all the options and choosing the one that best fits your situation?
