Instructor at a school

    I maybe leaving the road for an instructor position at the local college, this maybe interesting.

    Anyone else here tried there hand at teaching serious noobs from square one.

    This school says you or (I) would get a group of noobs, day one and they would be mine all the way thru, driving , backing, logbooks the whole banana...

    Hope it works out. I think it could be interesting point of view change. Maybe give the next gen drivers so of our hard learned lessons.

    God knows that good instructors are desperately needed. You notice I said GOOD instructors, and I'm betting you would be a good one.

    I also know that I would NOT have been. I don't have the patience to teach. Don't have the patience to put up with the know it all, or the idiot, or the flatly stupid one that you have to tell the same thing to, over and over again.

    If you go with this, I wish you well. Of course I wish you well, even if you DON'T go with this...:biggrin_25523:

    Lots of miles, lots of time, Ya know its easy to talk about the new breed. But if we teach them maybe they have a better chance to be a good driver, and maybe we can teach them not to block the fuel islands.....

    Well I can hope. Ive been thry the first interview waiting for the HR to call them I have a instructors review board. They will be sending me to Sacramento to get certified by the state as a CDL examiner is I would be able to test the students there at the college. Sounds interesting, I can always go bsck to driving.

    Thanks for the good wishes, I would still be on and off here.

    Know a few instructors at a private school in Northern California -- they loved being home, but didn't like the pay ($400-$500/week working >40 hours) especially when dealing with the frustrations of teaching a wide assortment of people who may have never driven a stick, never backed a trailer, and could barely speak english -- all on equipment that had been beat on by hundreds of students...

    Your experience at a community college may be better though.

    Well I would say it would be the next step up professor. But you know you will have a lot of responsibility to cram stuff in their heads, how long is the course, etc., hopefully not one of those 8 day wonders they have at the trucking schools. Also as far as teaching the driving part, how will that happen, is there going to be anyone else there to help.

    So far what I know is 160 hour minimum. 5 weeks is what they have indicated. 1st week and a half is to get them permitted, then after that is when the fun begins.

    There are a couple of instructors, but you stay with your students from start to finish, so its up to me to get them ready for DMV written then intruck.classrom to cover the other stuff, I will have a class (Hands on) Chaining up, actual brake adjustments both taught on a axle setup on a stand outside with functional air brake system and wheels and tires. Logbooks. you know the fully monte. The school has told me that they want us to cover more than the minimum to get them licensed, but also to get them ready for the driver trainer to continue with.

    I already have trained drivers for the last 10 plus years so this is kind of the otherside.

    The deciding factor is going to be the pay more than likely, I do not know what that is as yet.

    A good friend of mine did it in Mo.
    He could not fail a student no matter what..
    He would call or text me at times, stating how they can not grasp what's going on, but had to pass them.
    He lasted 6 months. Now he's a trk. boss in Az. for a local outfit running equipment around the state.
    This man had the exprience to teach..
    He quit saying this deal was a major lawsuit waiting to happen and he was not wanting any part of it...
    CDL mill, get the money and push them out the door

    Good luck!! I am looking forward to hearing how you like it if you decide to take it. My husband and I have both been approached to be instructors at a school but are not making the move as of yet. We are enjoying what we are doing right now but it is nice to have options available.

    I took an instructor position last year. It is something different than driving, you need to stay on top of every change FMCSA makes every so and so. Sometimes you get hood students, other times your students will have no idea of what they are doing. Be patient, and my thinking is I will not pass anyone I wouldn't like to drive in the same roads/streets with my wife/family.

    Yes, I have.

    Takes a lot of patience.

    Teaching is a skill-set outside of Driving.

    An accredited college sounds like a good place to be an Instructor.

    It sounds a bit odd that they want 1 Instructor to teach a group of Students "everything".
    We had different Instructors out on the backing range, out on the road, shifting, and in the classroom & lab, and another group of Examiners.
    It was helpful to have different Instructors opinions when a problem Student came through.

    Instructor is a good job. If your in a good place.
