Is it normal to have an instructor smoke in the tractor while teaching? We were not allowed to roll the windows down at all, along with having him fall asleep while I was doing 1-5 up shifting.

Talk to the administrator. That would not be normal. I'm sure DOT would be interested in the sleeping part.

You must have been shifting pretty smooth if he can sleep through you going through the bottom gears. I can remember when I was learning how to shift, nobody could sleep during that time. But to answer your question no that's not normal. Go to person in charge of student training and report it as well as the in cab smoking.

Evidently the instructor has confidence in your driving abilitiy; so much so that he can take a nap. I wouldn't complain about that at all; it's easier to learn without someone running their mouth while you're driving.

You must be some smooth shifter, for sure.

But the nodding off and smoking with the widows sealed is not professional (nor considerate) for any instructor.
I'm a smoker but wouldn't expect a "windows sealed" environment for students if I lit up (after asking if it would bother them).
Definitely not a professional top quality instructor, to say the least.

BTW, I was always trained to have the driver's window open, even if just an inch, to help be able to hear any problems (ie. unusual noises) enroute with tractor or trailer.

i take it as a compliment in a way. The biggest problem I have is the short seat time compared to other students. We are all paying the same price for the class. I would like more than 30 minute seat time compared to the others 2 hours.

I I have driven a 10 speed before on private property. I have the bare basics down of double clutching and shifting.

Roll the window down tell him to go do something to himself if he doesn't like it...let him sleep...guy probably has nothing interesting to say.

Get your CDL and get outta there...there is better stuff to complain about once you get with a trainer and then go solo....best of luck!

The other students probably need 2 hours seat time and you don't. Of course you should be getting more time, but just get that CDL and move on.
Pick a good company to work for and don't just settle for what the school pushes. You should have already been submitting applications. Will you live in Texas or AZ after graduation? Do you have endorsements?

Talk to the Training Supv. Ed. (tell him your concerns, he'll give you another instr and/or reinforce smoking outside the truck. emphatically, no sleep time for instr.) the instr you have is probably new. As for Driver Training Schools, they really have a detailed program when compared to other schools within your area. (w.w. white road facility, taught there back in '98.)

I am looking to go flatbed and have 3 pre hire letters already. 2 flatbed companies and a dry van company. I'm debating on where to move I am stuck in a lease in Texas until the end of this year. The. It's either Arizona, Wisconsin, or Iowa. I want to get my hazmat, tanker, doubles and triples. Basically I want to have all endorsements within the next 2 years.
