I just listened to a sales pitch from a guy from the Truck Driver Institute in Sellersburg, IN. I asked him how I could justify paying almost $2K more for his course ($6K) when the Truck America Training folks down the road in Shepherdsville, KY were charging $4,250. He gave me two reasons. TDI had relationships with better companies that would pay me more as a newbie driver and secondly, TDI is Yellow Ribbon certified. Initially, the Yellow Ribbon certification sounded impressive because I thought it was some special federal and/or state certification that I knew Truck America Training lacked. Yes, I should have asked the salesman more about the certification. I Googled the certification and it appears it is a financial program available to veterans. As I'm not a veteran, it's not something I can use to my advantage so its value to ME is zilch.

Is anyone familiar with these two schools and is it possible for one school to have special access to companies that do, in fact, pay new drivers a higher wage? Thanks for your input.

The "relationship" he refers to is the kickback he will likely receive from whichever mega you end up going to. 1750 is a chunk of change. Were it me i would look hard at the cheaper school. The cert will get you in no matter where you get it from. Beware, some starter companies will still try to lock you in to a 1 yr obligation even with your cdl. Politely decline and go to the next. Good luck.

Not sure I understand. What advantage would I realize by locking myself into a one year contract?

School tuition reimbursement, for one thing. And Hooda is right, once you get your CDL, you can apply at any company. Any school will have industry contacts, that recruiter speak - shake it off. That was good, and funny, about the kickbacks.

Attend the cheapest one since you're paying out-of-pocket.
Now, if you plan on specialized hazmat/tanker , then call the companies you're interested in and ask which school they hire from.

Funny he mentioned "relationships with better companies" guess he was hoping you wouldn't figure out you could apply with the same companies even if you went with the other school, MAN! I hate salesmen
