Hello to everyone! I want to start by saying i've been interested in becoming a truck driver for quite a long time now. I've recently decided to make the push and pull the trigger on it. I've looked at a few different companies that offer the cdl training, and you pay them back. That will be my only option to begin a career. I'm just curious if anyone has some good suggestions on companies based around Indiana. So far I'm looking at Knight, and Celadon. I think Knight is my first choice, as they seem like a great company, and pay you while you're in school learning. But I like to keep my options open. I have a friend who has suggested Venture Logistics to me. Thanks for the input, and I will answer any questions that can help narrow it all down.

    Chinatown Thanks this.

Try Carter Express....they use Sage. I started with Millis and I am not that far from you...great company to get started with and the instructor at the school you would go to is the best around. Stay away from Celadon.

Couple of Army vets recently posted they went with Celadon and like it. Of course, after being in the military, trucking is easy.

I'd second carter for solo and celadon for team only.

Just don't get in any 25 mile side by sides with Werner headed to Laredo on 35.

Carter has a big ole broker down there in the kilam park.

A&R trucking aint half bad ... They are looking for drivers. Go thru the Indiana career connect site.

Honestly I'd just move to indy and go to the ltls and locals. Better money for far less time spent working.

There are some horror stories out there about the Celadon school, and several have been reported here. Basically, the real problem is that the program isn't the 3-5 weeks they advertise, but rather 1-3 months. Celadon does house you and cover three meals a day, but you won't get paid for anything while in school, and won't get to go home until after your over the road period with a trainer (that is, up to four months after you started). They have no formal repayment plan, but will short you on pay on your initial contract.

Yeah I have decided to stay away from Celadon. I have a buddy who went through the schooling for Celadon, but switched to Venture Logistics at some point during schooling. I actually got pretty excited once I started checking into Millis. It seems very regional. But school costs $400 to start, compared to $100 for Knight. I'm applying for knight tonight, i've been studying the cdl book, and will soon go attempt to get my permit. Then I just need to see what other paperwork they will need, and get it all squared away before I start. I'm hoping to start sometime next month, either towards the beginning or middle.

I did look into Carter, and they are my next backup plan. I've just read so many good things about Knight, and getting paid while training at the range is a huge plus as well. I filled out the application for them tonight. So I will see how it all goes over the next couple of weeks. The one thing I am wondering now is, should I pick Dry Van or Reefer? I'm not sure what the big difference as far as miles, or where they typically run are. I don't know if with reefer you have to pull over so often and check to see if the load is cool enough? Any advice on that part?

Those reefers; some you can see the reefer lights in your rearview mirror; I've pulled trailers like that. Otherwise, just check the temp. when you stop for whatever reason; fuel, restroom, etc.
