    Sup Guys!

First post newbie here. I am thinking about starting a career in trucking and getting my CDL-A. I called the closest school to me today and asked a bunch of questions. The one thing that struck me as odd was the lady said they are not accredited because they didn't renew the license. She said they are working on getting accredited again but its taking some time.

The place I called was Truck Nation in Modesto Ca. Anyone have any info on them and should i really look for an accredited school? I read a few posts here where it came back to bite some people.

if they aren't accredited, then find another. You may or may not need that with a job, no matter who or where it is. That could be the difference in getting hired as a new driver.

I cut & pasted, this school looks very good online, their Trainers must attend their own training course. Some schools, just let an experienced driver instruct a student without specific driver training. (u dont want that)

Ok I have called Truck Nation, Mission Hill and Western Pacific. None are accredited and the price varies from 1500-4500. Some say they are licensed and such and have all the paper work the hiring companies want to see but i feel like thats just some BS. What should i be asking or does it really matter if they are accredited? I will be paying out of pocket but I don't mind paying more if its worth it in the long run.

Any thoughts or help here is appreciated. I read some posts on here about mission hill and while the people like the owner it doesn't sound like its really going to teach me anything I have to teach myself. Which I don't really mind but 1 person said companies laugh at that school. Western Pacific seems good and the few posts on here are favorable but they also are not accredited and cost the most so far.

I did a quick search thru the truckers report on Mission Hill posted by one past student, it seems like you'll rcvg all the knowledge required to get ur CDL and get hired by a Major Carrier or Local fruit/produce hauler in Modesto...perhaps u need a Trainer whom wears the "High & Tight" haircut. (chuckle...then, dont attend school there) :mcool:

    What!?

A former classmate of mine was screwed out of $1,300 by a 'school' (didn't teach him what he needed to know, put him in an automatic truck and drove ministry test routes while the instructor talked on the phone or napped, etc.--needless to say he didn't pass the road test for his license). Here in Ontario, Canada, I wouldn't even consider a school that's not accredited but that's just me.

You could start on the other end and talk with various trucking companies who hire new drivers, try and narrow your choice down to one and then see how they recommend you proceed to get training based on where you live and available options. They will make sure you don't waste your money and time at a school they do not recognize. Or they will guide you into their own training program [that many carriers have and actually prefer]

There are pros/cons either way you go. Just do your homework before you actually commit to a CDL school. (homework on schools and potential employers once you finish) You should have a good idea or know definitely where you want to begin working before you commit to a school IMO.

I would stick with schools which are licensed, especially if you are trying to get financial aid (like WIA) for your tuition. Also, some carriers won't hire from some schools. Are they doing their own CDL testing, or are they sending you to a CDL testing site which is independent?

Are you opposed to taking your truck training in Sacramento?
