Watkins/Shepard here I come!!

Well I got the call I have been waiting for. Sandy from Missoula called and gave me the good news. I will be attending the 1/2/08 class. Is anybody else going to that class? Im soooo ready for this, my last day at my current job is this Friday, 12/14/07. I have been doing this job (copier and printer repair) for over 9 years. Iam so ready for a change.

Is there anybody here that just graduated or is still at the school? I am looking the list of things that you are supposed to have. How much of that stuff is for the school and how much is for your own truck?

I don't know anything about their school, but if I where you, I'd bring extra money, clothing, washing detergent, pens/pencils, plenty of paper, A good map, (preferably a motor carriers atlas). Bedding, a 25' tape measure..... I think there's something on here, about what to bring on the road.... if you find that, bring all of that.
You'll more than likely be headed out on the road almost as soon as you get done with the schooling.(with a trainer.)
Oh.... bring a sewing kit..... stuff like that. You're going to be living on the road soon, and it's harder to stop somewhere to get something you need while you're under a hot load with a 53' trailer than it is with a car.
Bring a ruler for your log book.....
I read up on Watkins and Sheperd, and they sound like one heluva company. But all I know is from their website.

Bring gloves, for fueling, and all the fun you're going to have coupling and uncoupling trailers.
Ask your recruiter to email you a list, I am sure his will be more accurate.... but if there is something I mentioned so far that isn't on the list, I'd bring it anyway just to be safe..... cause I mentioned only things you're going to definately need.

I forgot the white out..... better bring two bottles. You're going to screw up on your logs a few times starting out, and white out comes in handy.
Oh..... and a good flashlight with extra batteries..... I keep thinking of more things to add. lol

Sorry man, I don't mean to hog up your thread..... but also, don't forget to find out about the eating/living accomodations.
I went to MTC in St Charles MO...... The recruiter told me meals were provided everyday, and that I'd be in a motel......
Turned out, that we got two meals a day.... very meager meals, and nothing at all on Sunday. I had no money whatsoever!
Oh, and I was in a motel room..... for the first week, then I was put into a dorm room, that I didn't even know existed.
So find out things like that before hand so you can mentally prepare as well..... and make sure he clarifies everything he says like that.
Beware of ALL recruiters. Trucking recruiters ain't much different than military recruiters, and they both can pile it just as high.

All good info except you are by yourself after 4 weeks of training not with a trainer.

make sure you call to verify you have a slot. I was told I had a slot in the dec. 14 orientation. when I called my recruiter roxy she never returned my calls or emails, when I talked to a guy named Matt he said they were booked and if I had any other offers I should go with them if I didnt call i would have been in missoula with nothig to do.

Good that you did call...WS just suspended their school. I already am approved for hire there, but I now have to get my own training elsewhere..then on to Missoula for the 10 day...

Yeah, the 30 day at WS was "suspended" for economic reasons...but I do have a plan B. I will attend one of their recommended schools here in SoCal, then have my 10 day sometime in March, I suppose. I can't start school until Feb 1 due to family obligations...
