Hi, I'm looking into the WIA program in the San Antonio TX area. I would like to know if the school that I will be going to is worth it or should I got to the companies for training? The School in question is Road Master in South San Antonio. I tried to look for it in other posts, but only found reports about the road master schools in FL....They sound like $#% holes, is the one in SA just as bad?

YMMV, I hear sometimes the rules vary by county, but I live in Houston and got laid off from my IT job in May so I went over to TWFC and asked about this and was told point blank they don't offer grants for truck driving anymore. Apparently the retention was too low for first year truck drivers to make it worth while. The best they could do was offer me a FAFSA application but that's based on last years taxes when I was still working so I didn't qualify there either.

I ended up paying out of pocket by putting my tuition on a credit card and then rolling that balance over onto another another CC w/ 18 mos 0% balance transfer so essentially I gave myself a 0% loan as long as I pay it off in 18 months. There's a few employers out there like Schneider and TMC that offer tuition reimbursement as well even if you paid out of pocket as long as you show them a paid tuition bill. For example, Schneider pays $200/mo after your first 30 days up to $7k. There's no obligation but obviously you only get that perk as long as you work there.

WIA in my current state recently turned me down, after I spent 2 1/2 weeks jumping through hoops and running all over town doing what they wanted. I was never promised funding but the lady basically said “when you accomplish all the tasks just call me and we’ll get you all set up. Oh and you better hurry, class starts soon!“ I left the office very excited after that first visit only to get a “ sorry, my boss said no. “Really? Wow... all this after taking 2 weeks of entry classes that the state required and doing all this other required running around, just a no.

    ##### waisted my time.

Edit: but I’ve heard/seen other people get funded easily. This was my first time trying to get some type of “help”- no luck
