| My cousin, who is unemployed, was all set to go to Swift, but they told him it was a month before he could attend.. so we looked local (Reno) and I read here that Desert Truck Driving School was good.. The big selling point was that if it took a little longer than 3 weeks you were not kicked to the curb, but could keep coming and practicing until you get your CDL.. He's now going to get it paid by WIA (Unemployment Dept) The Unemployment department requires you to take a test (basic reading/math), and also get your DOT Physical then they will process the WIA paperwork... apparently too many people got approved and then failed the physical, so that is the new procedure.. You get reimbursed for the physical (his was 78.00) after you pass the course. All other fees for school and DMV etc are taken care of. This process was started Wed, he took the Physical on Thur morn and turned in the paperwork on Thur afternoon.. Fri afternoon he still hadn't heard anything about drug screen portion of the physical.. so Monday will have more info on how soon can start school... it's the government after all, so we will see... Even if it takes a few weeks, he will be that much better off, in not having to pay back Swift.. and he also has the benefit of picking from a larger pool of Truck companies. |

| The guy I talked to at Horizon Truck School also told me if I was unemployed, there were grants available to me that will pay my tuition through their school. But, in case i can't qualify for the grant, the price is real reasonable at Horizon...... $2500 for their 5 week school, which includes one-on-one instruction in the behind the wheel portion. And a couple of the companies that recruit thru them are companies I am real interested in hooking up with. Looks like I'll be giving them a go. |
