Any experienced drivers or grads out there who can recommend a either a good school or company to work for??? I am weighing my options, and would like to start after July 4th. I don't want to make a grave mistake by choosing the wrong school/company. I know none of them are perfect, but if you have had a good training and experience - please let me know WHERE. THANKS!!!

Check out C1 Truck Driver Training in Indianapolis, IN. Ya, it isn't in Ohio…but if you have a problem driving a few hours to get to a school, perhaps you should be looking into another type of job. I drive for a small regional carrier and run from Indy to Columbus all the time. Takes be a little less than three hours.

My cousin just went to this school and he loved it. It lasts three weeks and costs $3,995. That price includes the physical, drug screen, books, and cost of the CDL test…which I think is $125 in Indiana. Since you would be coming out of state, there is also a housing charge but I don’t know what that is. My cousin lives in Greenwood and drove to school every day.

Anyway, they got him a pre-hire letter with both Swift and Werner before he started school. He ended up going with Swift because they pay $150 a month for tuition reimbursement. Werner has that too, but it isn’t as much.

This school also works with PAM and USA…who sponsor school through Driver Solutions. If you do it that way, you have to sign a one year contract and my cousin didn’t want to do that. Since he paid for school on his own he doesn’t have to sign any contract with Swift.

I’ve been to the school a couple times and it looks like a really nice place. There is also a Roadmaster here in Indianapolis but it isn’t anywhere near as nice as C1 and I believe it costs a little more.

I AM SET TO START TRAINING MYSELF IN JULY WITH SWIFT...BUT YOU ASKED ABOUT OHIO SCHOOLS...HAMRICK TRUCK DRIVING SCHOOL IS A PRETTY GOOD SCHOOL I HAVE HEARD NOT THROUGH EXPERIENCE..BUT I HAVE TALKED TO THEM ABOUT THE PROGRAM AND THEY ARE SUPPOSE TO BE CONNECTED WITH 30 TRUCKING COMPANIES INCLUDING SWIFT, SCHNEIDER, JB HUNT. THE DRIVE EVERY DAY WAS JUST TOO FAR FOR ME THEY ARE LOCATED IN MENTOR...OHIO TECH IS ANOTHER LOCATED IN CLEVELAND. YOU CAN DO A SEARCH ON CDL TRAINING IN OHIO AND SEE WHAT POPS UP

Well, I done graduated today.

Overall, Transport Tech has a lot of good things going for it. The instructors will definitely give you the skills you need to pass the Ohio test the first time out. Whether you acquire the confidence to do it is up to you; this isn't Barney's self-esteem camp. If you make a mistake they won't sugar-coat it or pat your hand. Man up and git 'er done.

I had to take the test twice after making a mess of the alley dock. On the second time I knew what to expect and got it in there. 3 points on all three maneuvers, 13 on the road test. CDL issued the same day I tested.

If you're looking for a 5-star resort, stay at the Sheraton. You're not on vacation, you're here to learn. The school may be a little shabby, and the pad trucks look like they came from Mexico, but the road trucks are 4 months old, 4-door Freightliners with a straight-10. You will learn to shift properly as part of the program.

The student/instructor ratio is 3:1 on the road. So you'll get about an hour or two of driving each day. Doesn't sound like much, but over the four weeks, it's enough to acquire the skills you need, assuming you're trying and have some sort of clue in the first place. There's job placement if you need it, and recruiters come in all the time.

Each instructor has a distinct style. You may respond better to one than another, but go out with as many as you can, and you'll learn more and be a better driver in the end.
