Hi all, I got my CDL permit and am about to start school, but where I live I'm very limited to my choices. There's only 2 schools close enough to me to work a full time job and attend classes. So I'm thinking of going with the school that's a block away from my job. Thing is, they are only offering me 13 hrs of behind the wheel training and charging me 1900. Does this sound like enough? I don't know what's normal class time or a good deal when it comes to CDL school. It would be 2 hours, once a week.... Any help is greatly appreciated.

It doesn't sound like enough, how does the other school compare, and what do trucking companies want of you?

that dose not sound like enough at all. The school that I am going to is doing 50 hours of class room training, 50 hours of field training, 20 hours of behind the wheel training and 40 hours of observation on the highway. But there is 20 hours of the class room training that you do before you go to school. they sent me lesson books and a test to do. Witch covers most of the basic stuff..

Yeah I think it's too little time as well. But does that price seem fair? The other school said their prices range from 1500 - 6000.

I know a guy who went through a drivers training course in Arkansas. He went through a seminar, and was presented with the option of going to work for one of two companies. Their school was three, or four, weeks long. And you had to be there ALL day long. During their first day there, they signed contracts promising to work for the company for a certain length of time. If they did that, their school was paid for. If they quit the company in less than their contracted time length, they would owe the company $4,000. AFTER they signed their contracts, the school officials then informed them that if they would have come on their own and paid for it out of their pocket, it would have only cost them $1,200. That was around 2001. But, it was three of four weeks long, of all day classes, and in truck training. Last edited by CURTWAYNE; 07.23.2008 at 07.06 PM. Reason: should have proof read

| my personal feeling is that the PTDI standard of 40 hours is too few. Money at this point isn't the .. point. 13 hours behind the wheel is flatly not enough.

Agreed, but... Yeah, far too few I think. But if you want to check with potential employers for their requirements, it might be worth your time. I would bet there are some that simply require a cdl. 'Cause all you need is one. Get some miles under your belt, good to go.

I was just thinking. 90 hours at 48mph average. 8 x $5.00 x 90 = $3600 fuel and misc. My school was heavily subsidized by the state.
