I think its mostly about performance. Why waste fuel: its a double whammy right? EGR starves the engine of oxygen a bit to lower the combustion temperature to reduce the amount of NOx generated. That makes soot, which takes fuel to clean out the DPF...

Now as for the acid part... Lets look at Cetane (you know of the Cetane number? - That number on the side of the Diesel pump). It has the chemical formula of C16H34. If we open up the high school chemistry book, if you burn it you get...

    2C16H34 + 49O2 -> 32CO2 + 34H2O

Now air is 78% nitrogen right? So if you get the combustion temperature of diesel up high enough and it starts to "burn" (oxidize) the nitrogen in the air creating the infamous NOx

    Well lets see....

If you mix NOx with water you get nitric acid (sometimes called the strongest acid in chemistry). So EGR has a little bit of nitric acid in it...

So yeah the more EGR run, the more nitric acid you're trying to push through your cylinders. Of course it should only cause a problem when you shut off the engine and it condenses in your intake and EGR cooler...

None taken. This post has nothing to do with the Prostar replacing the 9200. I liked and still like the 9200-9400(I-series too).

BOTH of those words can be used to describe the Maxxforce 13. I compare it to a detuned C13 Caterpillar. I can say that because I have driven both. I had the misfortune of being stuck in a new Prostar with the Maxxforce 13 for 5 months. I think in that time I only saw 1 other truck that had that Maxxforce badge on the side of the hood, everybody else is running Cummins for the most part. Luckily, my boss actually listens to his drivers, so I won't have to worry about that ever again. Even after cranking the HP and torque up as far as it would go, this thing is just a slug. Compared to a C15 or 485 ISX the Maxxforce is a pathetic joke. Putting a Maxxforce 13 under the hood is like sending a nerdy schoolboy to do a lumberjack's job. Face it, International blew it BIG TIME.

And when the truck is doing an Exhaust Filter Regen cycle on the highway, forget about having the window rolled down ,the smell will kill you. The smell is 10 times worse than when the current Cat, Cummins and Detroit do the cycle.I thought the idea of not having the pi$$ tank for the exhaust was initially good, but all International did was come out with a choked out pile of junk.

And the exhaust brakes won't even slow down an empty truck on a 6% grade at the high setting. Yes, I said won't even slow down an EMPTY TRUCK. Running west with this thing was hairy, i would hate to see rookie swift and Useless Express I mean U.S. Express drivers filling up the runaway truck ramps and flying Kamikaze down Donner/Grapevine/Vail Pass/ Hell even Monteagle is dangerous in this thing

I'll do you one better. If International, Paccar, Detroit, Cummins, mack, Volvo etc would stand up to the goverment, give them a big middle finger., and go back to pre-2003 emmisions with straight pipes, we wouldn't have these problems with poor performance and poor fuel economy. I wish Al Gore was taxed on the useless methane that's spewed out of his mouth for the past 20 years. Global warming is a scam and a lie.

It's time to start a Tea Party for Truckers, 1st things first no sweatpants allowed.

CO2 regulation is a scam. Clean air isn't. Making sure a Diesel puts out just CO2 & H2O that is a worthy goal. Jacking up diesel prices with stupid regulation is bad. Now if the truck manufacturers could think about investing enough time and money in ensuring a good system... For them after-treatment means after-thought.

Think about the automobiles of today. They essentially have zero emissions (because CO2 is NOT a pollutant) with the best reliability they've ever had. It took them 20 years to get there though and all of us had to suffer though the waste that was the 80s & 90s.

Now if we could get the power industry lobby out of the ### of our politicians we could get power plants that ran at something above 30% efficiency and didn't spew mercury, NOx and assorted toxins and heavy metals into the air. Ever seen the cars of the power plant workers? Not a spot of paint on them...

My experience with 2 prostars has been the complete opposite of the original poster. Ive got 160K on a 09 Prostar, The ride is like no other truck Ive ever been in. Its such a pleasure to drive I ordered another. The 2010 with 09 motor (DPF) has 40K miles and haven't had any problems with either truck. Both have the Cummins ISX's in them 500 & 's 600 HP. With the emissions and DPF'S they dont run like the older motors but the way it maneuvers, drives, and rides is very impressive.

Most of my gripes about power were about the Maxxforce 13, I will agree that the truck rides smooth and turns on a dime. But that's all it does.

And by the way, the highest you can crank Maxxforce 15 up to as far as Horsepower goes is 525. That's just sad.

When the CEO of the very company you bought your truck from basically says "the hell with owner operators, they're obsolete". I'm not sure why you or anyone would want to own one.

All of my previous complaints about this truck still stand.

And by the way, anything the Prostar does the Cascadia does better, and you won't have a rattle trap clutch linkage to deal with that International lies about having no fix for.

My major gripe was about the Maxxforce 13 motor. Even when cranked up to 475 HP the thing is still a gutless turd. And the Maxxforce 15 can only hit 525 HP if I remember right. When running the big hills or mountains out west or even hitting the slightest of hills in the midwest I was always down into the gears just to top small hills, way down into the gears if it was a big hill or a mountain.

And as I said before, the engine brake on the Maxxforce 13 is pretty much non-existant, there is NO EXCUSE for that. Yes the Prostar rides smooth, but so does the Cascadia. I'm not that familiar with Volvos but I'm sure they are similar if not better. I'll say it again and again I've driven stripped down 2002-2004 9200 models that were 10 times the truck the Prostar ever will be.

There are a few things I liked about the Prostar, but the cons in my original post far outweigh the pros. I also heard that International is buying carbon credits since they can't meet 2010 emissions with their new motors. On top of a putrid smelling regen system that reeks even with the windows up. Worst one I've dealt with so far.

I am currently driving an early 2007 KW T600 studio with a pre-emission 550 Cat and 13-speed. Like all KW's it rides like a brick outhouse and has the turning radius of an aircraft carrier. But I would rather drive this KW till the wheels fall off than touch anything new that I've seen. Oh and it still can get 6.5 MPG at times running the midwest, pretty good for a C15 with close to 600,000 miles.

That's just too funny right there! Funnier because it's true! It's in an awkward and uncomfortable position for me.

This is too funny. I have my old Freightliner down for a clutch and some other time consuming small tedious crap. I rented a ProStar. I had rented one a while back when they first came out and didn't really like it. It was BRAND NEW, though. The one I rented last night has about 300,000 miles on it. After driving it, I know that wouldn't trade my old '96 Freightliner for two of those pieces of crap!

The mirrors shake and rattle so bad that they are utterly useless. It has ZERO foot/leg room. It has a door that's about a foot thick and yet still leaks more air and makes more noise than my old FLD doors. The whole truck rocks back and forth violently and the front end is a wreck. It has more wind noise than my old FLD. IN fact, I think it would be quieter sitting OUT ON THE HOOD of my FLD. I HATE all those controls on the steering wheel. I'll NEVER buy a truck with all of that crap on the wheel. I blinked my trailer lights and honked the horn all night trying to find the jakes. Yup, air horn in the steering wheel. Totally retarded. Don't be surprised when you momentarily turn off your headlights trying to set the cruise control, either. Even little things like how bright the blue indicator for the high beams is in the dash. It's so bright that it blinds me, totally negating the high beams all together. The whole truck rattles, shakes, bangs, and flaps. Did they even USE screws or fasteners on this rolling lego set? It's like one of those old snap together model cars. Nothing fits just right, just enough to go together. My guts hurt from being bounced around so much all night. Could they have TRIED and made it ride worse? Doubt it.

Pluses? Well, it has one kick butt cup holder. The sleeper has lots of room, too. It does turn on a dime.

I pulled over twice last night to do a parked re-gen, too. I'll NEVER own that moronic set up. When the figure out something else, I may consider a new truck, but as long as there is a DPF on a truck, it WON'T have my name on the title.

Wheew!!! That felt kinda good and offset how angry I was after getting out of that Fisher-Price wanna be crap heap this morning!! :)

If you like a rattling, windy, noisy, flapping, cheaply put together truck with lots of cheesy looking fake plastic chrome that doesn't have any foot room, this is your truck!

You are trying to rewrite history it was Ronald Reagan that set and fast tracked the diesel pollution specs. You remember him, he did not remember anything, alzheimer, but his astrologer, and Nancy figured how to triple the deficit. Do you miss Jimmy yet! We were talking about an engine in a truck, and how it works and the problems people are having and what he thinks about it and you come in pedaling BS. At least get you facts right. Just a thought!
