Yah, you can change just the snapring and oring now and then change the whole pump next month when rest of it starts to leak. Changing just the back plate oring is a cheap-out repair. I bet that water pump isn't a year or two old to make changing the back plate oring worth it. If that oring is old enough to start to leak, the rest of it probably isn't that far behind.

You need a very large pair of snap ring pliers with a 90 degree tip the parts are cheap the pliers are not. You want to be sure if you take somewhere, that they have the right tools or they will not be able to get it out. Also if your cooling system is not very good it, the leak, could be caused by the pump housing corroded away past the "O" ring. This is one of those can of worms situation, and you will not know until you open it. You will also need a couple of small wood screws to go into the little holes in the plastic cover, so you can pull it gently you only need the "O" ring. The hard part is cleaning the grove, and getting it to reseal. That is why most places will not do it. I would recomend you buy the exchange pump. Just a thought and Good luck!

I disagree on the cheap repair. check out the link I got from detroit websight. seems these back plates are common on leaking & they offer a solution.

Well, I think it is a nice thought. Trust me, I love nice easy and quick repairs. Chances are the back of the pump will be rusted, corroded and very dirty. Getting it good and clean would still require taking it off to cleaning it on a bench and replacing the back plate and oring. You already have the pump off, so just replace it and be done with it. Plus you will get a complete waterpump warranty. With just changing the oring, thats all you get.

Does anyone know how many hours they charge on replacing the water pump on one of these? I've got a 95 pete with a cummins in it that looks like it's going to need one, and not sure how much I'm looking to spend or how much time it whould take to just do it myself? Any help whould be greatly appreciated thanks

The weep hole is doing what its supposed to. Plug it off and there's a good chance you'll start pumping coolant into your oil.

I just replaced the plate on my water pump. The upgrade kit comes with a nice heavy metal plate. The dang snap ring pliers are about 10x the price of the parts!

I recommend you double check the new snap ring is fully seated, or it will still leak (I know).

I had to pull the turbo pipe to get to it. While I was at it, I cleaned and repainted the pump, replaced the hoses and clamps on every hose I could reach, including the turbo, and cleaned and repainted the top metal coolant pipe. I figured while I had it apart and drained, might as well do all the preventive work I could.
