This is weird. Where is the break occurring? I can't tell by the story you have written. When the shaft breaks is the pulley falling off because the shaft broke infront of the gear or does the air compressor no longer turn because the shaft broke behind the gear? If the pulley half breaks away I wonder if the belts are too tight and flexing the shaft. If the compressor half is breaking I wonder if the compressor is getting hydraulically locked with water or coolant on top of the pistons. There really isn't much else that shaft drives. Is this unit still running the original compressor? Is the rear of the compressor bolted the bracing and the bracing bolted to the block?

Yeah, Air compressor is gear driven and when shft fails, fuel pump does not send fuel to cyl. head and engine stalls

today the shaft breaks right in front of the pulley where the seal ends , but the other times it break a little further back and theres some oil leak last time when it broke the driver ran 6 miles from the shipper where he delivered and parked in the lebanon Missouri truck stop he just cut open a gallon bottle of oil and strapped it with a clamp to catch the bit of oil and waited for me to get there the truck ran and compressor worked fine , the pulley only fell off and i talked to the original owner and he told me that in 2000 the cummins tech said that it was probably the belts so they replaced there shaft assembly and the pulley and the belts and sucked $2200 out of the guys pocket then again in september 2002 same exact thing happened this continued to happen every two years or so the only excuse cummins came up with was that the shafts were made of low quality materials and that i should replace the shaft with one out of an older truck and keep the rest of the new assembly. I hate playing the guessing game but right now im thinking its gonna be either the compressor stressing the shaft or the harmonic balancer because those are the last things to change. Cummins also told me that they've seen the timing cover break often but have never seen anything like this happening so often

The accessory drive shaft is breaking in front of the bushing. That I have never seen and I worked on then for many years.
The harmonic balance is for the crank, I was involved with a test where we put on a huge accessory pulley to speed up the fan and it burnt the belts off in one day never hurt the shaft. That is a large shaft 7/8" Cummins should be able to look at it and tell you why it broke, flaw, machining, to hard, what it is. I would take the pieces to a dealership that has a teaching facility and get the to send it to Cummins Engineering and get there opinion. They have some really good guys that should be able to give you an explanation.

Seeing as there is a lot of Cummins enthusiats around, please assist me with this dilema. I am about to make a decision on the following engines.
    1. Cummins Big CAM IV - 400 HP
    2. Cummins N14 Celect Plus - 430HP
    3. CAT C12 - 430HP and
    4. Detriot Series 60 - 430HP.
Which of these engines would you pick and why?

im away from the shop now where i have the broken shafts i should be back there this weekend so i can take some pics and show you guys , the owner of the truck left houston about an hour ago they replaced the shaft assembly with one off the cummins shelves , one of the previous ones, i bought at the international dealer it had the mark of the beast made in china , i paid like 200 for the complete assembly plus gaskets and some coolant and threw it in and made my delivery on time but anyway i called cummins and told them it did it again and the shop foreman from cummins in wisconsin wants to see all the parts and see what he may find wrong with the truck hopefully this gets solved soon

you need to contact cummins tech support. not your local cummins guys. They should be able to help you a little more.
