Most information you gave is correct, but you have told him to go to Cat Dealer to have his ecm changed. Dealerships can not change a MBN to a 6NZ if they want to keep their CAT sign out front, I have worked at one, seen people fired over it and Cat almost pulled the dealer. And for your information, Cat went back through the history and called all trucks back that had been turned up, offering a "free oil change", and then when the truck was in for the "free oil change", the ecm was change back to stock settings. Warranty did not matter, Broken EPA laws were the consern.

If the dealer has hooked to the ecm, the download can be sent to Cat. The Cat password system will not allow passwords for incorrect flash file changes, so the dealer would have to install a 6NZ serial number in to the ecm before flashing, this also is all kept on the Cat system. Any passwords generated by Cat is kept in the system by the serial number used.

There are better ways to get ecm's flashed without Cat getting involved. Just do a bit or reading on this site.

I did not say to have his ECM flashed.
I said to Buy a used ECM from a different engine.

The EPA may have control over truck owners in Canada. But not over Private truck owners in The USA.
The EPA can take a hike and would meet a harsh response by telling me how to set my truck up.
I may have sort of messed up a little with the 6NZ part , So what , That was not the issue.
Last I checked he was from the US and can still do as he wishes with his own property.

The next point in all of this is that the EPA Has no concern what so ever on what he or I gets for fuel mileage. They just don't want to see Black Smoke. TOO BAD...
The truck performs better and puts hundreds of dollars back in my pocket every week.

I would like to know if the Jake brake is working and what fixed it.

The only reason the EPA , DOT, and all the other Government run Businesses keep telling us what we can do and how we can do it is because we keep complying with their every whims. :biggrin_25521:

One other thing about the C-15 .
last I check on the CAT charts , the C-15 can be had from a 435 HP to a 625 HP.

Why then would flashing to 600 HP be so wrong ?

I see no support for the statement made against this. Nor do I see any wrong doing on any CAT dealers part if they did do this...

Seems to me if they can be had at 435 to 625 HP , turning a 500 to 600 specs is within all reason. And Legal TOO... :biggrin_25519:

    Cut and paste from Cat....

    MXS and NXS C15

    ************************************************
Lower rated engines can not be uprated to 600/625 HP rating
    ************************************************

    Not legal. Different engine family.

"The EPA may have control over truck owners in Canada. But not over Private truck owners in The USA."

Did California become part of Canada?

Also the EPA is the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.....They control engine emissions of USA built engines, nothing to do with Canada. They are part of YOUR elected goverment.:smt064

There are different engine families of CAT Heavy Duty Truck engines. You have a couple of different engine families confused with each other.

3406E ser # prefixs 5EK, 6TS, 1LW, 5DS now there are also differences in this family as to engine cubic inch displacement. The 5DS is 962 CI the others are 893CI. Then you also have the ser # prefixs 1MM and 2WS in this family, the 2WS is 893 CI while the 1MM is 962CI, but they also use a different electronic control system.........the 5EK, 6TS, 1LW and 2WS were the 893CI engines and were rated from 310hp to 550 hp. The 5Ds and 1MM were 962CI and rated rom 575Hp to 600Hp

now we have the C-15 and C-16 engine families.......these engines are either 893CI or 962CI.........ones called a 15 liter engine and the other is called a 16 liter engine, but they are actually 14.6Liter and 15.8Liters in size this engine shares the same electronic control system as the 3406E ser# prefix 1MM and 2WS........same engine with a different sealing system to stop oil leaks that were prone on the 3406E family. These engine ser# prefixes are 6NZ and 7CZ........the 6NZ had a power range of 375 Hp to 550 Hp. The 7CZ went from 575 Hp to 600 Hp.

The flash files between the 14.6L and the 15.8L are not to be mixed matched.......this doesn't mean you can't do it. Uncle Sam just says NO!!!!!!!!

now you are confusing the new C15 Acert engine family with the ones above.........this is actually a 15.2 Liter engine in size. they actually used the stroke of the C-16 engine with the bore of the C-15 engine to come up with more torque at low rpm

Did you notice the difference in the two designations? C-15 versus C15........your confused......these are two different engines

The C15 can be rated to 625 hp depending on the hard parts of the engine.........the low hp ratings go as high as 550.............to go to a 600 0r 625 hp rating the engine has different internal and external parts........your again not supposed to flash a 550hp to 625hp......but it can be done, just not at any CAT dealer

If ya want to learn.........there is plenty here to read in this message board

On the money as usual Mr Haney.

Cat dealers are not allowed to set anything outside Cat's factory specs (with the exeption of PAR dyno but that would take too much explaining). That doesnt mean they dont, just they will be in trouble with Cat if they get found out. That is Cat's policy worldwide regardless of the government making the rules, Cat's guideline for unauthorized modifications covers all markets, and no matter who owns the truck.
They even published service letter explaining how to identfy a modified engine and what to do when you do come across one.
