Hello i am new to the forums,

I am looking to buy a truck and i found a 07 Volvo 780. it has low miles but i had some questions about the engine and transmition.

The truck has a Volvo D-12 465 hp engine. how does this engine do? does it break down often? how does it work when going up a hill?

the truck has a MD-16Z12A-A ZF MERI transmition. is this a good transmition? how does it work when going up a hill?

I drive with a stepdeck incase that matters.

Thanks for all the help i just would like to know if i should stay away or not from the truck.

Do yourself a favor and get with one that has a Cummins ISX engine. The Volvo engines are not good as they are notorious for problems. The transmission you mention sounds like the ZF Freedom line if I am not mistaken. Personally, I would go with one that has a ISX500 or 530 thats mated to a 13spd manual. Best of both worlds as you have more gears for climbing mountains,

The Volvo engine is so bad because A) the parts are twice as expensive as cummins, B) the EGR's go out all the time C) if you need a rebuild or inframe it will cost 1.5 times more than a cummins. D) Volvo has a limited dealer network compared to cummins. I am hoping some members who had volvo engines will chime in.

There were two EGR valves on those engines.

Its funny, every time I run across somebody that owns a Volvo engine they have nothing but good stuff to say about them. Its only people that have never owned one, or they have a "buddy" that has one, and its junk.

That should tell you something. Ask the folks that know.

    Good luck with your purchase

Oh yeah, well I have a buddy who has a friend that says... ;) Just kidding & know exactly what ya mean.

I did call on one that was for sale early last summer & the owner of the truck said he had only replaced the EGR valves once on a D-12. Said he paid close to $1800 but had found a place near Elkhart IN where he could get them for less than $800. Never checked it out as I passed on the truck for other reasons, but may be worth asking around if you own one.
