Yes that would be a big help. I need to know how to R/R mine also. DOT man cited me for a crack one and gave me 30 days to fix it. My buddy gave me 2 of windshields one for each side and need to know if I can do the job or pay a professional to get in done. HOPE SOMEONE REPLIES!

Every Pete I ever drove or owned I was never able to remove a windshield without breaking it. Sometimes I couldn't get a new one in without breaking it!

Good luck. I also had a local window guy tell me there was really no good way. His special tool?? The sole of a Red Wing to the inside of the glass.

Yep, just what I was gonna say, kick it out. There is no way of removing them without breaking them. The last time I had one replaced, the guy broke two new ones while installing them.

And $250 a piece for the windshields is way high. I can buy them all day long at my local Pete shop for $100 a piece.

Im starting to wonder about R/R the windshields myself.:biggrin_25513: I think I'll be better off paying the professional to do the job in case they break one while installing it, they would have to replace the damage one themselves.

    saddlemt,

I have never had any luck taking a window out without breaking it. I would find somewhere else to get your glass from, last window's' I put in less than a year ago was appx $80 per side.

You can do it yourself, a helper is almost a must though. Parts needed: nylon clothes line, 2 rolls of cheap cheap duct tape, make sure you use the roll of putty that comes with the glass or it is almost guaranteed to leak. Start by removing sun visor, outside, not the inside ones, use duct tape and tape all of window inside and out, raise hood, get back in the cab and kick window with both feet... hard. May take more than one kick. Now for the funner part, use the nylon clothes line, stuff it in the groove in the bottom of the rubber gasket all the way around leaving about a 2 feet or more of tail to pull on, make sure that they cross on the bottom and that there is no slack. Now put your putty on the rubber gasket that will be on the outside of the truck trying to keep it off the pull rope. Start by putting the window in the bottom rail, spray some wd40 on the rubber and the frame. now lean window in, as the seal gets tight on the frame, hold one end of the cord, then pull the other past the gasket. The best way I found, do one side first till you get about 4" from the top corner, then go back and do the other side. When you start on the top corners, do them at the same time, just dont pull your cord out. Your helper needs to be applying a 'medium' amount of pressure on the outside of the glass, pushing in, esp. when you start doing the top corners. When the corners are in, then hold one end of cord again, and pull the other past the gasket, Congrats your new window is in.

Haystack that is some valuable information. I appreciate you helping others. Would your technique work for any make of truck too???

    KH,

I learned this technique from having to replace too many windows. HEMMiT windows dont like artillery concussion. I dont know why it wouldnt work for other trucks, but I havent tried it on anything but Osh Kosh and Pete.

If you already have a broken glass you can take a razor knife to the gasket inside the cab. Slice all the way around the windshield near the glass but still well onto the rubber. Windshield will nearly fall out. Lots less "shards" to vacuum up.
