I have never owned a Scania but there was a small family company doing some work for us back in the 80's that had a couple of 142H Scania's . They were doing 1500km per day with them 6 days a week. They clocked up over 3 million each by the time they traded them for 145's with only preventative maintenance and one inline each that was done on about 1,8 million. If I did not see their logbooks and have them doing loads for us I'm not sure I would have believed them but I saw it first hand. The owner was a specialist Scania mechanic that looked after the trucks very well but worked them hard. They typically ran at 100 to 110km/h at about 47t gross between two city's that are about 1500km apart on highway.

do you remember which year they were or how much hp,

early models are only turbo without intercooler 388PS, this is worst of all V8 , scania force them pretty much,

    than intercooler 420PS (430hp) appears in august/82

in 1985 scania stop to produce old non intercooler engine and introduce 390PS(400HP)

since 1986 they start to use engines from 3series, 395PS(404HP) ,411PS(420Hp)

388 non intercooler ones have flat grille,

420 came with sloped grille it was extended 50mm

390 comes only with new cab with round C letter on SCANIA letters, but with old bumper ( it was not available with old cab, altrough i have seen some non intercooler with new cab)

395/411 come only with new bumper

I cant say for sure about the year but around 88 to 90 if I think about it.
They were 420hp and were inter-cooled.
I drove a 1970 something Mack F series COE with a turbo intercooled 310hp and could never keep up.
That was actually a good thing as it made me stop chasing turnover and focus on profitable specialized work.
I remember I was averaging 6000km per month and they were at least 36 000km and we were making the same profit.

    hm,

3series were released in 1987 , some of 2 series were sold latter until 1988

so this should be 411PS 3series engine

but there is maybe possibility that you got models from brazil , they had 2series until 1991

here until some 10years ago you would be hard able to find somebody who can work anything on scania ,here scania was established in 1998, there was some private company 200km from here that used to import parts but this was only on request.... there was one service about 350km from here who worked on scania trucks but this was still far from anything serious, there were no aftermarket parts as well

when my father bought his first 112 i think there was no more than 5 scania trucks in country , everyone were making jokes about it and so on....

roads back than were pretty bad, not like today, today is everything flat, and wide, they would go up and down and ...... one were always overloaded few times even more than 70t , other was light aluminium and was used mostly for international transport

during winter they it was driving salt for roads, and in back direction agricultural goods,
during summer it would drive construction material for reconstruction of the war, in latter years, it would drive diabas rock, and in other direction ore for cement, i think english name is plaster,

driver who used to drive it for year or something like that, overheat if many times, he was newbie, but nobody else wanted to work that much except him, they would rare drive only 2 tacho sheets at once, mostly 3 , michelin tires would last 100k, shell(mostly) oil every 20k ,fuel air and oil filters were changed almost regularly.,

mostly whole brake cyclus last only 37000-38000km ( drums+pad, than 1st tol, than 2nd tol ) , as it did not had retarder and it was always heavy and on steep hills and fast, scania had small 7inch drums on front axle and 8 on rear trailer standard 420x180mm

other 112 had even once 47000km on brakes new brakes , until 1st tolerance

except that i have found in maintenance book , that valves were adjusted at 626000km(by some self-proclaimed mechanic), belt was changed twice, thermostat, front bearings, differential side seals

we have sold it with 1100 000km,

drivers break diff lock twice, because they forget to disengage it , he get this in italy and austra used

once father stuck with 70t in mud, and break halfshaft =300 DEM cca 150€

except that with only one brakedown , some screew that pulls clutch breaks, 35€
and once police force my father to put chains, as he have no idea how to use them( he put only right) , he put it oposite on right wheel and chain break, and hit fuel tank, and brake cylinder, they have some kind of rubber cap on top of it , and he lost it , and over years salt get in and cylinder corode , he put it from older model , dont remember how much was

and once intercooler hose leak ,was 110€

in nov/2011 it was on sale it had "792000km"

than owner told us , he change seals on clutch, he breaks once halfshaft as it often worked in field, and he says if he keep it he would open engine and look if something need to be changed

anyway none of those trucks here was never maintained, most of inline scania would crack crankshaft at 2mil km , most did not change filters, were using cheap oil and use red diesel, and were driven by idiots

so it is hard to compare that lifetime with lifetime of that one that was serviced

I know it's trendy in the US to hate Euro trucks, but anyone whose driven them will be made into a believer, quick. I've run both R and T models... while I don't care for the synchromesh boxes, those are some rock solid trucks, I tell you. I might still get involved in the "US vs. Euro trucks" pissing matches, but I will never go as far as to actually bash a Scania. Ever.

normally, as most manufacturers scania is against AWD and strong engines, so normally they offer only up to 450/490hp

except unknown number of 142 6x6 for norweigan army, and 60x of 143 6x6 for them, there is very small number of V8 and AWD , just few rebuild units, one prototype 143 500...

but as japanese heavy haulage need lot of weight on drive axles to be able to pull more total weight , and some austrian operators wanted 730 6x6 for timber trucks, scania offered r730 with 6x6 as special order, also some are made as 8x8 for army

there is at least 10 of r730 6x6 in japan, 5x in austria (this was situation 6.5months ago now i am not that much into it)

as much i know this is first r620 with 6x6 wheel configuration, for heavy haulage
this one is for russia, as their fuel is bad there is no way 730 could work there ( as much i know only 1 in russia)

it comes with shortest wheelbase, 3600mm +1455mm (142+57inch) , 5th wheel 1600mm (63inch) high , this one comes without subframe, not like japanese also use lower tires so save about 200mm (8inch)

scania still use old on front driven axle, 4.22:1 ratio with 3.81:1 hub ratio, rear axles 4.27 ratio
scania also offer RWD models with 4.21:1 hub ratio and stronger halfshafts (some models still use 3.81:1)

but no such option for AWS trucks, probably their sales in AWD are too low, so developing new axle would be too expensive, also hub is not updated but from pervious range

front towing beam, equipped with big 56 rockinger hitch, this is about largest one you can get , only one larger is 58
    this is quite bad solution,
towing hitch should be much lower, but it complicates instalation a lot,

with this high possition you have problem, when pushing low modular trailer it would lift front of truck and lose traction, drawbar should be horisontal as much as possible,

this is not big problem on classic european 8x4/4 configuration as it sits much lower, and truck is heavier on front

as you can see rust is factory installed,, i simply dont understand that scania is not capable to solve this problem in almost 20years , before scania trucks did not had problems with rust in chassis, i understand they need to cut production costs, but this is big shame for scania

chassis components, vg2700 worlds strongest transfer case permanent 6wd , still too weak for 620 v8 ,
high placed brake cilinders are normal on hub reduction axles,
    5x48mm parabolic springs 32ton- 70600lbs rated
    [IMG]

cheap interior , i dont see many options here, here soft instrument panel is standard since 2009 ,i though nobody chose this cheap one, also most of other plastic look awful, cheap upholstery
note that there is no clutch pedal , many heavy haulage companies still wants clutch pedal

    more of its cheap interior
fixed bed is thing of past here , since 2013 all R series have extendable
most of highline cabs here have wide upper bed as well not like here
    [IMG]

permanent awd, 1:2.6 , collum of grso925r gearbox ( normally fitted on R730)

    15.6L V8 ,3000Nm(2215lbft) -1000-1400rpm
now scania offer only small adblue tank on awd trucks
    BT300 bogie
    [IMG]

same ro56 ringfeder on rear, also on wrong height
