I have also turned out many an iva code by just cleaning the plug of oil.. I normaly add a little dielectric grease but have done a couple without.. 9 times outta 10 it works.. I could be wrong but i would rather spend 20 min pullin a cover and tryin that fix first before I spent big bucks at the cat house or dealer to find and replace parts that you might not need.. I'm not gonna argue that jake and injector connections are open to oil and work fine, but unless youve done it yourself how do you know it doesnt work.. Makes no differnce to me if its the oil being cleaned out, the connection being reset, the grease if added the retaining clip being tightend, or whatever it is that actually turns out the light. Point being, why tell people that they are being lied to or that they should just replace this and that, when this fix works 9 outta 10 (in my experiance), is basicly free and can be done on the side of the road if you had no other options.... Like I said before, not tryin to start an fight here but it does work.. I'm not sellin anything, just want to help save someone some $$ if they can....

    Hey :
While I know I said that plug is worn , which I think is right, I also did not say go buy a new one. I said I saw a guy put a new one on.
I , too would first try anything that might work.
A tweak here and there may do it..
May want to be near a dealer when trying , but I would still try. :biggrin_255:

    W903B Thanks this.

Coal Bucket, you clean the terminals with electronic terminal cleaner, blow it dry , add die electric grease. And it works 9 out of 10 times that means it is a winner, and I learned something, even if it does not last for ever if if works for a while. What I said was if Cat is telling you to do that if it is under Warranty. There is a difference, at least to me if Warranty pays you do everything. You should be able to buy just a pig tail and replace just the end with a new plug. That is another option, if you are paying. Just a thought!

Well, after rereading my post I seemed to have had an attitude in my reply that wasnt ment to be... I was extremly tired and couldnt sleep when i wrote it (much like tonight)... sorry.. My line of thinking (from my adventures with cat or the local dealers ) is that even if it was under warranty it cost me less to "fix" it myself than to lose income waiting tru the warranty process... even replaced a couple of vvas under warranty myself (they gave me the parts ) just so i could aviod downtime..Thats just me... I do understand your points (both of yours), I reread twice.. just didnt want a quick "fix" to be discredited... I have a couple of of buddies who had vva codes (out of warranty) only to have the dealer sell them a $700 vva assembly without ever mentioning the accuator 2 pac for about $120 ( i think).. They were also told that the plug thing wouldnt work but after a new code apeared, they were ready to try... I just hate seeing guys spend big bucks if they dont have to... I'm certinly no expert but Ive had my fair share of accert issues and have gottin a prety good handle on em.... I guess my long winded reply could be summed (spellin?)up like this.... if your accert went into derate because of a vva code and you're in the middle of nowhere, cant hurt to try? Now just for fun... i have heard the therory that its not just the oil itself in the vvas, but the metal particles in the oil and the extremly high voltage used to opperate them.... :biggrin_2556:.. Just thought i'd toss that soft ball out there:biggrin_25525:...Again sorry bout the tone and writin that gosh darn novel up ther...

I worked on the VVA's when they first came out they wanted you to do, everything but replace the kits and would pay 4 hours for the complete job , that included three test, and three hours of driving and, 3 tune-ups. Got to the point we had to send them to CAT. If we prebought parts they would charge us restocking fees if we did not use the parts. No exemptions.
