What are the cons of this? I've got 3:70 rears with 11R22.5 rubber. I'm running 67mph at 1600 rpms. My truck pulls great loaded heavy in the hills but sometimes I would like to have longer legs than what it has. Would I sacrifice my pulling power if I did this to my transmission?

Change to 24's will be the easiest alternative. Try that first but remember to check your clearance height (the 13'6). Otherwise a slow rear axle still keeps you slow with good pulling power. If you wanted long legged, I dont believe this is the transmission but the rears. Perhaps one of the mechanics that frequent this board will tell you better.
A 13 speed will just give you more gears to work with. -

A buddy of mine has been telling me that flipping the gears gives you a lot more top end. I dont understand how, why, or even if it's true was kind of hoping a gearhead on here could explain or least tell me the cons. I agree rears would be the best swap for what I want but that would cost too much and I like the 3:70's they work really well for me. I dont want 11R24.5's either. It just sucks to be turning over 1700 rpms going 75mph. It's just an idea I've kicked around I need to know if it's a bad idea...

I'll check the tag on the trans later on this evening or tomorrow and post back...

I'm not sure either if the newer trans can be turned around. I have one turned around and it real long legged with my 3:55s. It kills your 1st and reverse gear. I have pulled it out and replaced with a single o/d 13. The double over 13 will take a big hp engine to pull it. If I remember correctly in 13th with the 3:55s at 70 mph I wasn't turning but 1200 rpm with 11/24.5 tires. I ran in 11th and 12th gear mostly. If you have the power it will most definately run fast, way up in the triple digits, I had a 160 mph speedo so I know it would run. This day and time it's no fun to have such a rig.

" I had a 160 mph speedo so I know it would run." i could put an altimeter from an airplane in my fld, but i thnk i might have a problem cruising at 35,000 feet.
best way i know to get more top end is by changing the rear ends. is the 3 grand price tag worth it? -
I dont run faster than 75 - dont care about triple digit 100mph trucks - usually 70 is plenty enough. The lower rpms would be nice but I've got a good truck and dont want to screw it up. Driving around in direct most of the time would be good but not if my truck falls flat on it's face in the hills.... Also I wish my transmission was an 18 speed so I could split that last gear on the low side when i'm going up... It just seems like too big of a jump imo with me not being able to do that particular split. If that got worse with flipped gears i'd probably mess up a good truck.?.?.

all right. You need to decide how much leg you want. and what do you mean? would you like more speed at the same rpm or more speed with less rpm? you can goto roadranger.com and play with their road speed calculator and get some good ideas and you can compare the gear ratios in the transmissions.which not as different as people think. I have people tell me their double over 18 will run faster than my double over 13. just can't make em understand gear are gears. anyway from your numbers on here you should have 3.90s in that ole truck, if so a change to 3.55s would give you about 75 mph at the same rpm. changing rear would be the best option, but just make sure you don't screw up on your power range. Do some good research and feel comfortable with your choice, don't just go what someone else has done.

imho , change the ring and pinion to 3.36 or 3.55 leave the 13 in place , i think you will be a happy monkey, johnny
