Hot and cold fuel

I'm not sure the OP really meant the fuel temperature itself given the last comment: "what staates have hot or cold fuel"

One could say that higher density fuel is "hot" fuel because it has higher energy density, burns at a higher temperature, and gels in low ambient temperatures (i.e. heavy #2) and that lower density fuel is "cold" fuel for exactly the opposite reasons (i.e kerosene). Some refineries do put different densities, I hear the northwest states have some pretty heavy fuel.

Now if you take the same fuel and run it either "hot" or "cold" you'll always get better performance running it "cold".

 

Or is he talking about the hot fuel issue that OOIDA is always on a rant about?

 

It's not a "rant" - its a real issue. First, there's nothing you can do about "hot" fuel, except fill your tanks around dawn.

Second, yeah it's an issue! Fuel (gasoline or diesel) expands a heck of a lot when it's heated up. So who cares you might ask? You should! Those above-ground storage tanks you see at some fuel stops absorb heat during the day, and heat the fuel. The fuel at the pump is metered by volume. When you pump "hot" fuel, you're getting a lot less fuel for your $$$. In other words, you're getting RIPPED-OFF!

There's an easy, cheap fix that can be done right at the pump that adjusts the metering system for fuel temperature. The fuel stops in the US don't want to do this because it'll cut into their take. That "fix" is required by law in Canada.

 

I like the idea of just taking the chemicals that rise the temp in fuel. Posted a petition on WhiteHouse website to do just this--now looking for signatures, we need 5,000 to get petition to committee. Here is link:

What chemicals are being put in fuel to raise the temperature? I find this very hard to believe. The petition you created, if it even gets 5,000 signatures, just goes to staff at the White House, not any kind of committee that can introduce legislation.

 

If you've ever machined aluminium, steel, or pretty much any metal the cutting tool generates heat causing the work material to expand and you have to allow for that.

Fuel is no different from metal. As it warms up it expands and has less energy content (BTU's) per gallon. Hot fuel is bad, less energy content per gallon, less mpg's, less dense. Diesel engines run better on cooler fuel.

Water is the only substance that expands as it cools and turns to ice.

 

I used to haul fuel and 90% of the loads were diesel, when I would check the computer it showed temp and gallons.

Also did pump outs when a place was being revived and had new tanks going in, procedure was to take temp and dip the tank before recovering the fuel.

The only time fuel temperature fluctuates higher or lower is in above ground tanks that I have recovered.
