We have a 1999 John Deere forage harvester with a 450 hp 12.5 liter Detroit in it. It has 3400 hrs on it. It runs like a top, but recently it seemed to have suddenly developed blow-by that seems a bit excessive. There is a fair amount of vapor and blow-by coming from the crankcase vent tube. Also there is oil dripping from the tube that was never there before.
3,400 hrs. seems like it's too early for the rings to be bad. I'm thinking it may be the turbo seals allowing pressure back into the base.
Does anyone have any experience with this engine, and is this common on this engine?
    Thanks

I can only tell you that you dont want to stand too close to a Series 60, they are liable to throw a rod at anytime, you either get a good one or a bad one, theres not a whole lot in between, every Detroit i've ever seen has a lot of blow by

With out a doubt the dumbest quote of the month. Sure must be a lot of suckers out there running all those metal slingers. They do tend to have a lot of blowby or slobber.
