55 watt bulbs are the highest watt bulb that will correctly work on the low beam side of any 2004 or newer Volvo truck. This is due to Volvo factory setting of the computer. Volvo told me that they cant change the computer setting to accept anything else. I HAD installed a HID conversion kit on my truck which is a 35 watt package. The left and right side worked for a few minutes and then the computer will cut one side out. This is the same for halogen bulbs greater than 55 watts also. Summing this up, does anyone know how to trick the computer to make HID lights or higher wattage bulbs work on the low beam side?

Add twenty watts worth of chicken lights?

I know that's frustrating, maybe the best solution would be to wear out Volvo's engineering department for making a computer do the job of a relay.

Actually, that might be a solution, just use the factory switch for the running/marker lights, and rig up your own switch, fuse, and relay for your HID's.

Hello! About Volvo version II. All the light is controlled with LCM unit. There are "smart" electronic keys (based on MOSFETs) inside, that measure current, check for bad bulbs, short wires.

Yeah, if U'll put HID you may get bad low beam bulbs fault codes.

So relays will not solve your problem....

Any dealer may easily reprogram LCM with VCADs Pro ore VTT software. For me this is 10 min. stuff. I did it many times. So look for deaer with VCADs pro, and if dealer says, that he cant do it, tell him, I can help him to do it.

VCADS SERVICE AND MAITANANCE:17030-30 PARAMETER, PROGRAMMING: EXTERIOUR LIGHTNING: LOW BEAM XENON BULBS

Thank you Pablo for the info about computer program. I will check into that with other Volvo dealer other than the one in Kernersville NC.

Do not forget to change parameters to keep low beam on when high beam is on, if it is not programmed now.

What I meant was to completely bypass the factory system, run a new hot wire through the relay operated by the new switch. I know it's a rigged-up solution, but it would absolutely solve the problem. If the parameters in the computer can be adjusted that's clearly the better solution.

This is another reason I'll never own a Volvo, God gave me two good eyes to tell me when I've got a bulb burned out, and two good ears so I can hear somebody on the CB tell me if they spot it before I do.

You will get fault codes! you can run new wire, but you will disconnect wires from LCM, and you will see "change low beam bulb" warning on dashboard.
Ouh, you can cut J1939 and J1708 wires on LCM and what's next? Dashbord warning: "LCM is not found"....

Reprogramming just change current test for low beam lights to get no fault code.

LCM is built in Version-II Volvo trucks all over the world and cant be disabled w/o fault codes!

If you never used the factory headlight switch, it would never know.

LCM.... seems to me you do not understand how the Version-2 is designed.

You can not bypass LCM and get no fault codes. "Smart" sweden guys did all not to let you do something w/o VCADs software!

    Well, some diagrams:
