C-15 Cat Engine Problems.

    Sounds like that foreman didn't want to mess with it and fed you a line to get you out of the way.

    It does sound like that guy was feeding you a line-mind saying who it is?

    I doubt this is possible, but I don't know how these ecms get their info-but is it possible that the ecm isn't getting the signal from the coolant temp sensor and only turns the fan on/shuts down when it senses the oil temp going up?

    For the most part the engine doesn't OVERHEAT. It just runs hot. I have read on Cat websites and other engine websites that the the newer post emission engines DO run hotter than the pre-emission ones do.

    I still think mine is running TOO hot. I don't see 205 or so is "normal"...maybe it is. I do know that pulling 40,000 lbs back to Arkansas from Las Vegas I was on the side of the road 3 times with the lights flashing and once it completely shut off and wouldn't restart for about 10 mins. This is NOT normal. The other trucks on the road wasn't shutting down. Granted it was 100 out there...still the other trucks wasn't shutting down.

    Either I get the problem fixed or I trade it off. I appreciate all of the comments.

    All the cats I've run sit right at 200 degrees or cooler with one exception. That one ran a little hotter but still didn't shut down. The only t600 I drove had a 425 cat. That one I ran across the desert a few times and it never ran hot. Not even at 120F in the Mojave pulling a full load of glass. That was an 06 if I remember right.

    5EK and 2WS here. Fan on at 215-217 and off at 205. Same readings on gauges and dash computer on 5EK.(2WS truck doesnt have dash puter)
    I agree, seems hot and have considered changing fan settings. Several very knowledgable members here and elsewhere have convinced me to leave alone.
    Started driving on trucks that were set to run 180. If temps got hotter than 190, something was very wrong. Times change.

    The mechanic is wrong about the 235 degrees..........217 degrees and it's been 217 degrees since 1999 on All CAT engines. If you want proof go to a CAT dealer and have them hook the laptop up with CAT ET and and go in to the Status section and you can watch coolant temperature and when the ECM sends the siganal to turn the fan on.

    You have two sensors in the water temperature regulator housing..........ones for the ECM. The second one is for the gauge. The one for the ECM is located towards the front tucked in a hard to see spot below your A/C compressor mount. The one for the gauge is usually mounted on the top of the housing. I've seen a wide spread in gauge readings compared to the ECM.

    You have a cooling problem with the truck.........the truck shouldn't be getting so hot to shut down. If you don't find the problem soon .........you could crack a head.

    The 3406E 5EK, 6TS, and 1LW engines brought the fan on at 205 and shut it off at 195 degrees. This was before the LOW NOX software programs came out. The LOW NOX files changed the temperature ON/OFF settings to 217/ON and 205/OFF. If you flash an ECM with a pre LOW NOX file.......you will get these lower ON/OFF setting with the fan. You also will pick up throttle response and power. I have the old files if anybody's interested in flashing their ECM back to the pre LOW NOX files.............PM me

    The 3406E 5DS 600 hp engines brought the fan on at 217 and off at 205. These were written before the LOW NOX files came out, but had the higher fan temperature settings..........these files will make a 550 scream up the road........725+ hp

    I agree all of the older trucks run cooler. I used to run a pre-emission (before '04) Detroit. It ran 180-190 and didn't get much hotter than that. I have read on Cat's website and on other websites that the NEW engines DOES run hotter.

    Mine probably does have an over heating problem but still C-15 twin turbos and the other post-emission standard engines run hotter. They do that to help burn the fuel better. I'll get mine checked out to see what the problem is.

    When i buy my truck with cat c13 the mpg was from 5 to 5.7 now i have 5.5 to 6,3 depend of the load ,heavy 44k -5.5,light 30 k -up 6,and i do the best when i changing my muffler now with the pittsstraightmufflers iam happy with my mpg,and is a cheap deal the mufflers only bring easy the money back

    I know a lot of the drivers out there only guess on mileage or go by the onboard computer. I don't do it that way. Here's the way I do it.

    I go fuel up and write the mileage down on my ledger. Say the mileage is 779,599.4 I don't have mileage to subtract the first time i do it. Next time I fuel I might get 146.9 gallons and my mileage is 780,524.5. I just subtract the lower mileage from the higher one and get 925.1 miles. Then I just divide the miles by the number of gallons and I get 6.29 mpg.

    This is how my dad taught me to do it. That way there is no trusting the computer is correct. You will KNOW for sure what mileage your getting. My average over 2 months of driving my truck so far is 5.7. I think it should be higher since I don't idle much at all. Then again I mostly hauled 40,000+ lbs loads with the company I just ended my contract with. I have noticed on loads under 20,000 lbs I'm getting 6.3 mpg and over. Maybe it will work out to where I can start hauling some lighter loads and run mostly flat land.

    Iam do the same writing for my mpg miles driving for gallons ,this is correct the rest looking for computer works not correct,and the other lighter load super mpg ,better lightloads
