So I visited my local Kenworth dealer today, and I have to say, I was impressed by the numbers.
They have fully loaded 2011 W900L's on the lot, heated leather seats, sunroof, studio sleeper, 24.5 rubber, ISX15 500HP, 18 speeds, the works, for $135.000. All said and done, in the end, I could have a brand new 2011, with warranty, for about $2,800 a month, with taxes and the whole works. To me, that's a pretty juicy deal.
Does anyone have the new ISX15? I have heard very good things about this engine, but I am frightened by the Urea injection system and the burner.
They also have ONE 2011 left with a CAT engine in it, 475, which they will sell for $130,000, same spec, full load. The 07 + CAT engines scare me more then the Cummins because of the HUGE amount of sensors on the back end of the engine on the passenger side. Scary!
So what is your thoughts? Would you, as a one person operation, buy a brand new truck? I have been searching for a good 02 or 03, pre emission unit, but it is proving to be maybe not the smartest approach. It seems every older unit I find, if the cab and body themselves are in good shape, the driveline is worn out. Vice versa applies, I find one with a completely rebuilt drivetrain, only to open the door and find the dash has been cut up, someone went to town with sticky tape, staind carpets, funky smells, the list is endless.
This would only be my second truck, so I am very anxious to hear some advice from people with a lot more O/O experience under there belt.
I am only 23 so, maybe I should smash my head against the fender and wake up, go back to school before it is to late!
Will you buy new?

$2800 a month ?? That is a huge payment I do hope you have some really high paying freight..
-
My last truck was a 2004 I paid $39,000 for, my payments were $2,200 a month and I did just fine. I have no mortgage, no credit card debt, nothing, just the truck.

New ISX 15 EPA 2010/Euro-V SCR Ad Blue???? Ouh! it is a pain! belive me!
Additional tank for carbomide, sufusticated SCR unit with low reliability.... some SCR related codes and... power derate + speed limiting!
Cat 15 with DFE have some regeneratin issues too.
IMO. Pre EGR engines (up to 2005) and Euro-III engines are optimal choise... -
if you really really need a new truck--why not go for a glider---
more reliable--and better fuel mileage--your choice of setups
and you dont have to mess with the piss injector
and CHEAPER as well -
I'm not a driver, or an OO.
I'm in the market for a sharp 389 to tow my demonstration trailer for my business. The truck won't make a dime for me when it sits, and it will sit a lot.
I have plenty of time to do my research, so I am looking at all of the angles.
I can tell you this, the 135K isn't anything special. You can order a nicely loaded truck, whether it's a Pete or a KW for that price all day long. So, if you want a new truck, order it to your liking.
Myself, if I were to buy a new truck to go over the road with, I would buy a 389 rolling glider, and build a 6NZ.
I have the luxury of time, I'm just not wanting to spend the money on a new truck unless it can make money to justify it..
If you do not have time, I would stay far away from the C-15, and go the ISX with the SCR. Better mileage, better engine and more reliable. -
I don't know how anyone that's a one-man-band can afford new. Unless you've got something REALLY outstanding to do with it I could never justify it.

"I am only 23 so, maybe I should smash my head against the fender and wake up, go back to school before it is to late!"
I agree!!!! You have answered your own question. -
Compound interest will do amazing things for you when you start investing while you are still in early 20s. It will make more money for you than a brand new truck ever could.
I wish I had enough brain to realize that when I was 23....nsane4 Thanks this. -
