I have the series 60 12.7 on 01 Western star these past two days temps got colder not extreme cold or anyting like high 20's but truck wouldn't start would turn over with no problem, then spayed ether into the air intake and started up, once it started I had no problem starting it up after shutting it off.. could it be the check valve that is starting to go or just cold weather blues.

probably a bad check valve allowing the fuel pressure to drop overnight
-
ok, so it's nothing too serious since once its running I have no problems. what do they normaly cost and is it something I can do myself or only a shop can do that.. can I manually pump to get fuel pressure or is ether the only way till the valve is checked and replaced if needed.

if you just changed filers check them first gasket might not be seated after that if the lines and all are good go to the check valve
same exact problem found on a friend of mine's 2000 ws with series 60 ( i called him for answer)
the check valve should be at the back of the cylinder head on the line that returns fuel back to the tank ...take it out and you should be able to disassemble it ...... there is an o ring in there and it's probably cracked ......clean it out and get a new quality o ring from auto parts store like napa (not out of a horror freight kit) reassemble , put it back in should be good to go
make sure you take it off the truck to disassemble on the bench so you don't loose the ball or spring or you will be screwed -
those valves in the back of the head can be #### tight sometimes--not sure of the room on star but on a classic short nose--you are kinda one handing to get it out---
good luck -
change the srs and the trs sensors.the srs is above the air compressor going into the front cover, trs at bottom of compressor.(srs harder to change than trs)srs is bad,but you should change them in pairs.%95 of time will not throw a code.am very confident this will solve your problem.good luck.

First thing I would do is clean the battery connections, check and clean the grounds. you need 195 RPM cranking speed to fire. I would be very chincy with the either you can really ---- it up.
second thing is to change the fuel filters and be sure you have fuel preasure, you must have 15 lbs at idle, 20 is better, 35 at 1200, 45 is better, and 60 at 2100, 68 is better.
Removing the check valve is a decent idea looking for drain back. If the system is not allowing in air the fuel will not drain back anyways.
If you have access to a scanner, you want to watch cranking speed, and SRS signal. If you have no codes and the cranking speed is above 195 and the SRS does not say yes it is defective. I have changed very very few of them. cleaning the battery conection usually fixes the problem.
Just a thought! -
but i doupt, it is EPS, engine wont restart! As I understand engine wont starting after truck sit for some hours.
Unfirtunatly there is no hand pump on Columbia and we used to add them from mercedes truck to prefuel.
But if I cant locate problem surally I use to do the cheap stuff first, starting with check valves.
Then I use pressure gauge, there is a fuel pressure port on fuel delivering pump. 0.3 bar when starter crancks engine is enougjht to start up, but new pump pressure is 0.5-1 bar. -
ok thanks for all the help, i def don't want to keep using the ether as it's never a good idea, I noticed that if the engine keeps cranking I can hear it starting to catch and starting so I will start with the battery first and the rest after that... I did just have a PM done and new fuel filters were put in so I could check them too.. once the truck starts I have no problem starting it back up just after my 10 hr break it has the starting issue so I hope it's something simple since I just had my radiator replaced and new muffler put on nice 2800 dollar bill
