my egr valve has been replaced 3 times and just now turned over 80,000 . No one seems to know the cause . Also 2 fuel blocks cracked as well as oil pan . What a heap !!! Someone should start a class action lawsuit lol .

What's the procedure and materials used to flush the egr cooler?

Yeah, inquiring minds want to know!! And, what would it cost to do the cooler flush while everything is opened up anyway? If it were mine, I would just have them do it while they are there doing the EGR even if Navistar is not going to cover it. A International tech I talked with a while back who was their resident "guru" on the Maxxforce said that the cooler needs cleaned out at least every 150,000 miles or you will have trouble. Whether you have an EGR problem or not. If you don't, you will have a laundry list of problems including the valve.

This is an older thread. A few things have changed since then. The EGR cooler flush/cleaning is a "retired" procedure and no longer recommended. They have come out with cooler core replacement kits. The egr cooler housing stays on the engine and when the core is plugged you replace just the core. EGR coolers are actually 2 coolers in one. The rear section is the hot side, front section is the low temp side. There have been ECM calibrations to cure core plugging due to improper egr valve operation. 90% of plugged low temp cores are cause from coolant leaks from the hot side cooler leaking coolant into the exhaust return flow. Unless the ECM is logging codes for EGR low flow they are saying the exhaust gas temps flowing through the coolers are hot enough to self clean once the coolant leak has been fixed. To be honest, I have only changed one low temp core for being plugged without a coolant leak. Every other time it was because the hot side cooler core leaked coolant and that mixes with the soot to plug up the low temp side. There is no maintenance intervals for core replacements. Replacing at certain intervals is just wasting your money. The ECM will log a low flow code if the low temp becomes too plugged. At that time, you need to make sure the engine isn't using any coolant. As far as warranty goes, this has been streamlined to increase uptime. Once the engine has logged EGR low flow we automatically replace the low side cooler core. If there are any signs or codes of low coolant we go for the hot side too. If the engine is only using coolant or code for low coolant and we confirm the hot side is leaking, we only change the hot side. Again, they say the Low side will clean itself once the coolant leak is fixed as long as there is NO low flow code.

I have read all posts , and sounds like a really bad idea to get to one of these trucks ,,, but I'm looking at 2012 maxxforce, with 550 miles on it, cheap price under 40k. engine was compliantly replaced at 440k miles due to loose cylinder cracking block, also egr cooler just redone. only think that is wrong with it is hard cold starting, needs a push of gas pedal to get it going , warm is fine... will that be a loss of fuel pressure ? used frightliner for same year will be 25k more.. what you say YES or NO ???

Since there are some International techs here, I'm curious, have you guys been around the new SCR N13's yet? Are they going to be better you think?
I've heard good reports from some owners so far. And my International and Cat truck dealers were willing to give me the names and phone numbers of customers that have taken delivery of them. They seem pretty confident.
I really want another Paystar or even a Cat truck. But still wondering about this engine.

It's not like our Cummins and Detroit's have been flawless either, LOL.

Any engine is really good for the first 150K or so. So far so good, but it is too early let to say anything.

    Star4900 Thanks this.
