Loud Pipes...Little Winkie...

Some loud exhaust does sound good, yet some sound very sick. If I was driving a loud car, truck, or motorcycle and it sounded sick, I would want people to tell me so that I could do something about it.
One of the best sounding cars ever was a 57 Chevy 283 Power Pack with twin Smitty glass packed mufflers, 100 % better sound that straits. Its not only loud but has great tone. -
I eventually swapped trans and lowered rpm's and also put a small baffled muffler under the cab. It gave it a much better tone, deeper tone, not the high pitched I had with the mufflers.
It also lowered the sleeper noise when idling. I no longer have the rumble of a muffler right by my head. Where before it was mind numming. -
My 379 has a deep, throaty tone.
I have 6" straights but also have a frame mounted muffler (which is ready for the junk pile BTW)... I've had pure straight pipes before and I can attribute my 50% hearing loss in my left ear to an unmuffled engine.
I not just an old fogey who can't stand loud pipes... I like a nice exhaust tone as much as anybody... my blown '56 F100 has 12" glass packs on it... but straight pipes (especially on a Series 60) are pretty much "persona non grata" with me... -
If you get a ticket for loud pipes and jake brakes in a town that has it posted at the city limits, you deserve every penny of the fine... I cant tell you how many times that I have been woke up in a truckstop when some knuckle-dragging wannabee rolls through the parking lot with his jakes turned on with straight pipes. I called one guy out on the CB radio about this, and he wouldnt answer LOL

Your right, ear damage, we don't think about that till it happens, and many there be now whose ears are ruined by loud music. No doubt listening to loud exhaust mile after mile will damage the ears.
I learned to drive on a old long nose Marmon, those twin stacks on that old 250 had a loud pretty sound when winding out, yet at cursing speed it was just a light rumble. -
Here in Maine it is now illegal for bikes and larger vehicles to run straight pipes. I believe (Maine Gov) did it to give the ability to penalize anyone running with out a muffler.
My favorite way to quiet exhaust was to invest in some stainless pot scrubbers. Granted on 6" stacks you would need quite a wad. Just my 2 pennies -
As long as you don't idle full blast next to me while I'm trying to get a few hours sleep I'll be fine.
