First off I would like to say Hello to everyone in the Forum! So I guess I will start off with the basics I drive a 93 Fld Weight test truck With about 1,500.000 miles. I was getting sick of the horrible exhaust sound from the worn out muffler so I ran a pipe through the muffler and have ran my truck straight pipe for the last week, and I must say I am loving it! Thats not what the problem is though. I am at a truck stop finishing up my last job so I do the usual. run the truck up to high idle set the pto and begin setting and dropping weights Then I see a old dirty man walking over to me yelling about how "us #### kids need to quit running loud trucks" and how we "are going to go deaf" so I politely ask him if I was disturbing him he shouts "all you stupid ##### kids need to grow up" I evenly ask him if he is going to be the one to hand me 300$ for a muffler and I also told him i am well within my rights to run a straight exhaust on my semi. after this exchange he storms off to his volvo vnl780 which is hazing a steady stream of blue smoke and drives off. This left me wondering why are so many people against straight exhaust on big trucks? I mean I would understand if I was driving through residental areas but I wasnt and the way is see it if I want to run a straight exhaust on my semi I will, and I dont do it to get attention, I dont do it for compensation, I did it because it was a cheap and simple fix at the time and quite frankly I like the way my truck sounds. please tell me that im not completely stupid or in the wrong here?

Actually, law requires you to have one on the truck.

I also have a 93 FLD and both my mufflers combined wouldn't cost $300. Just go buy a cheap muffler and throw it on if you get in trouble.

That being said.... I've got 6" on mine. Its loud and I do try to be curtious when passing thru most towns.

When the old guy was first started yelling at you, you should just looked at him and said...... What?

I think loud pipes are great,,,,except! When the Jake is on and your in a TS, or going throught residential streets at say, 35mph or less. There are so many drivers that use the Jake with Straight pipes just to sound kool. Frankly, it startles the crap out of me when I am drving along a residential street and one comes by me with his Jake on....

Just drive into a scale and ask the DOT if your truck sounds cool. :biggrin_2559:

Since they make the bumper stickers it must be cool... 'Loud pipes save lives".

I've got some pipes on my truck...and I like it.

I love the way my little l10 sounds now. I think it was just a case of Angry old driver, we all have our bad days and need to vent, just not on a poor scale truck driver :biggrin_2559: I am liking the big straight pipe now makes my truck sound like its got power. now all I need is to custom fab me a visor and my little ole' 93 will be ready for another year of hard work. If I did more residental areas I would definitely run a muffler though. im not going to ruin it for the other truckers.

Hate to Burst your Bubble CRX but the Geds have Determined that all OTR Trucks must have a Working Muffler on them. The Turbo no longer counts as a Noise Reducer. It was just announced in the FMCSA REgs a couple weeks ago so say BYE to Straights.

I think staights have always been illegal in most states, but I've ran them for forty years and will continue to do so. The old driver probably just needed to vent or else needed an attitude adjustment. Welcome to the board.

on a motorcycle yes, it is very true.

people dont see small motorcycles, & quiet bikes they dont hear, they just glance in mirror & switch lanes, which to a biker can be life threatening.

on more than one occasion I was able to blip throttle & person would swerve back into their lane as my bike was way louder than my horn, but my pipes wasnt really loud unless I got into it.

saw more than 1 person wreck thanks to them changing lanes & me revving & them swerving back. 1 swerved too hard & went down an embankment, another I was on a date & it was girls first ride in a city 80 miles from where I live & someone person came into our lane when I revved he swerved & hit car in the lane on his other side. better another cager than a biker.

my Harleys are took apart, & I presently ride a Kawasaki & of course it has a loud muffler, but not as loud as my straight piped Harleys.
