Anyone out there ever had this problem. I have a 2000 FLD Classic with a Series 60 Detroit. The problem is that the clutch fan will come on and stay on but the engine is not actually over heating. It comes on at random. The temperature gauge will bounce around in 25 degree increments and the engine won't do the automatic shut down. We have tried a different ECM and control module and it will does it. Sometimes it won't do it at all and sometimes the fan will come on immediately when you start the truck. We are at a loss here, Detroit and Freightliner can't seem to figure it out. If anyone out there has any ideas, i'd sure appreciate it.

Temperature control settings have a little to do with that.........

sounds like the clutch fan servo to me. i had one go out in the volvo i had and it took 3 trips to the company shop's and 7 trips to volvo befor it was fixed.

every time we were in the shop it would work then 50-80 miles down the road it would start to go stuped, had us on the side of the road 5 times.

A/C high pressure switch or circuit will cause the fan to come one too.

My friend "The Railsplitter" has a patented system for dealing with problems in older trucks:

Step 1: Report truck stolen after placing cinderblock on accelerator, leaping from moving rig, and watching truck sail over high cliff...

    Step 2: Collect insurance money...

    Step 3: Buy new truck...

    Or...

Alternate Step 3: Invest in gold or buy partnership in saloon... :biggrin_25523:

if the gauge bounces around then it is electrical i.m.o. could be the the sensor that is in the thermostat housing. that sensor is what sends the signal to the dash guage. if not the sensor itself, check the wiring from sensor to dash gauge.

I know the 4 wire switch in the thermo housing sends signal to air switch on my old one, does it also sent the temp to the gauge? I replaced mine cause of fan running all the time, wouldn't make to send air to turn fan off. Temp gauge inop on mine since I bought it and 4 wire sensor didn't change that.

I use to start with air system. If there is no air in #4 air cicruit fan will not stop.

Next step - check voltage at solenoid. If no voltage - check ECM wiring, and A/C wire, may be ECM thinks A/C is on LOL!

Next step - check air supply of solenoid, and air line from solenoid to fan clutch.

About ECT - your dashboard use temperature data from ECM via J1708 ore J1939 and if gauge reads correct temperature, do not look for ECT issues. If gauge reads overheating ore nothing - check ECT wiring!
