2000 cat 3406e with 22-11 coming up.When this code comes active engine loses all power and sounds like a rattle snake {injectors cycling but no fuel}Changed both cam and crank sensors checked wiring harness all the way back to ecm with ohm meter.Changed primer pump, going to change check valve next.Engine has 800k on it.Gear back lash is .010.Going to dealer to get sensors synced any thoughts?

johnp3 would that cause the symptoms. It doesn't do it unless your under load and about 1600 rpms than if you let up on the throttle it returns to normal than once you accelerate it does it all over again.Boost is at 30 psi if that helps fuel pressure stays at 90-95 psi under load.

Has any of the gear train been removed lately? I cant remember but I think this will illuminate once a certain temp is reached if the timing is either advanced or retarded a tooth. Will still run but throw the check engine light.

If you have the code it has to be taken care of because the engine will definitely not run like it should. Did you have the code before you started changing timing sensors?

another garage sent it to me after they changed sensors.Timing gears have never been apart.Cat ET under testing says that you shouldn't have to sync the two sensors if the ecm hasn't been replaced.Maybe the ecm is going bad.Going to do further testing today.Engine has never been apart it has 800k on it.

rechecked gear lash, swapped out ecm still same problem, disconnected cam sensor while running left disconnected test drove no more 22-11 with disconnected. still same problem no other codes come up.changed check valve on bottom of filter housing.Cam sensor disconnected shouldn't effect power while running only start up according to Cat ET.This one has me puzzled any help would be appreciated

I would pim time the crank and check the gear timing, to be sure someone did not change it then sycronise it, something has to be telling the ECM that the Cam and Crank are not sycronised.

CAT has had some problems with this. You may want to try updating the flash file, CAT wrote new files to compensate for harmonics in the gear train that were causing calibration problems between the two sensors. I think you'll need a May 05 or later flash file if I remember correctly. The other problem that can come into play is if the head has had the surface cut too much. This allows the camshaft centerline to be closer to the crankshaft centerline causing timing calibration issues, but you've said it's original so this shouldn't be a problem. You can disconnect the crank sensor and leave the cam sensor also.........it takes a little more cranking to start doing this, but should run with no problems also.
