Can anyone give me the procedure for doing an overhead on a 3406E Cat?
Its a 5EK serial #. Also does anyone want to sell the tool for setting the injectors?

ok this is not for the average joe blow, u need to have somewhere to get he truck out of the weather, a decent selection of tools, good mechanical knowledge, patience and time. on the right side of the eng at the flywheel housing there is a hole at 6 0'clock position, just big enough to get a 3/8"x4" bolt in, that is your pin timing hole, now have a friend push in on the bolt while you take a long ratchet and short 15/16 socket and turn the engine clockwise. now once the bolt goes in to the flywheel and locks, u can take the bolt out this is tdc, now tdc could be on #6 or #1 cylinder. now take a paint pen sharpie and marker the balancer where the fan belt is even with it, this will be for when rotate the eng agin to do the last set of adj, or you can have your buddy repeat the process agin to make sure u lock in the flywheel again. anyway, take the valvecovers, turbo inlet pipe, whatever out of your way to access the top of the engine. now with the eng pintimed it will be tdc on #1 or #6, the easiest way to tell is grab the rocker arms for intake and exhaust on #1 or #6 and see which set you can rattle up and down, the set that you can shake int and exh on is the tdc you are on, then set those for that tdc, then roll the eng around to the other tdc and set all those adj.
    #1 TDC adj. intake 1,2,4 exh 1,3,5 inj 3,5,6 #6 TDC adj. intake 3,5,6 Exh 2,4,6 Inj 1,2,4
you need a .015 feeler guage for the int/ a .030 for the exh and jakes, adj the jakes the same time you adj the exh rocker, you want the feeler guage to slide between the rocker tip and the bridge smoothly with a slight amount of drag but not a lot, u should be able to slide the feeler in/out fairly easily with slight resistance. you dont want them too tight, or too loose. hope this helps, it is quite in depth and maybe not as clear as it should be but let me know, its quite an undertaking because if you set somthing to tight you can bend valves and break stuff. good luck

the procedure is the same for all 3406E's and C15's(except the c15 has an iva setting that is .020 and is set at the same time as the intake), there are a few differences in the jake or exh settings but not alot, most are .030, some were .033. if in doubt your local dealer with access to cat online can look your serial number up and tell u the exact spec.

my 2 cents worth.... its worth the 60 bucks for the barring tool. I got mine from monoco tools, but i went to get a link for the tool, they didnt have it in their list of tools anymore.

well to do it properly you need to check them with the tool and if it is out of spec then you already have the tool anyway to set it with. if you are taking the racks off and changing injector o-rings or whatever then you have to have it to be sure when you retorque everything, the inj is set correctly. last 1 I bought from cat about 4 years ago it was $70. idk if anyone else sells them, really havent looked but your local cat parts house can get it/ or have it. good luck.

You can measure the injector height if you want. The measurement is 3.07" plus or minus .001" or 78mm plus or minus .2mm

CAT part number for the injector height tool is 9U-7227. The last one I bought was around $75, but that was at least 4 years ago.
