I have a 2004 International 9400i and the clutch is hard to get into gear unless i go to 1st gear and then it will go into any other gear when standing. It shifts fine when moving and pulls great with 80,000-90,000 lbs. I went to shop today for clutch brake adjustment and they told me i need new clutch for $2,500. The clutch has 1.5" free play and works great; why would i need a new clutch. Dave

Sounds like the clutch isn't fully disengaging even though you are fully pressing on the pedal. There are lots of internal clutch failures such as broken springs or release bearings that will cause issues like this. If you doubt the competence of the shop diagnosis, go to another shop for a second opinion.
