i had the same thing with the 09 ixs i had, had it in 5 shops in 6 weeks and no one could find it, every one said nothing was wrong or it was the cap (2 new caps in 1 week) got to the point i was adding 1 gl every 500 miles and the dealer still couldn't find it ( i keep telling everyone it was the egr cooler) after 3 times into the same dealer (with white smoke out the stack the last time) thy changed the cooler, it took 4 more trips to the dealer over the next 3 weeks to fix the things that running that much water out the stack broke, turbo, dpf, muffler,

I've a 2008 ISX 485, and the coolant was down about a quart, twice in the past month. I thought it might be just a small hose leak, and I intend to have it pressure tested next week.

If it tests out OK, then maybe from what I've read on this thread, I could be in line for a new EGR cooler :-(

I'd be interested in comments on the following:

If I require a new EGR Cooler, then would it not be cheaper and better in both the short and long term to send the ECM to Diesel Spec in Montreal, have the EGR & DPF removed, and remove the EGR cooler? Then I'd be done once and for all with all the EGR/DPF tree-hugging nonsense.

No real experience with this myself... however what I've heard from others is that any improvement with this is spotty at best. Best guess is that is because these components are integrated into a system that expects them to be there.

You might want to talk to the people at Pittsburgh Power about this. They have had some experience with de-EGRing an engine. Heard it was expensive to do it right.

As I understand from reading the EGR threads, the ECM is re-programmed so the EGR &DPF functions are eliminated, the EGR is unplugged, and the DPF filter is removed. Diesel Spec charges about $2k, so I figured it may be cheaper in the long run to go that way.

Depends on the engine too... ACERT Cats are probably the worst of the bunch to fix.

Thanks for your help guys . they have put a new cap on and level has stayed the same. Which side of engine is this egr cooler located on? tech apparently pulled a large hose off drivers side which is conected to air to air rad....(.charge air cooler ?) and looked inside for white dust ? Does this sound like he was looking for evidence of a bad egr cooler?
    Thanks again Muff

My guess is that Cummins was checking to see if the CAC itself was leaking. I read on a post here that sometimes you can disconnect the piping going out of the EGR and see glycol residue. My cooler did not have residue but when they took it off and put air pressure to it and put it in a tank of water it was leaking. Pretty common problem. By the way the cooler is on the right side of the motor,it has a tube coming out of it that goes across the rear of the motor to your EGR valve. I would not do any deletes until the motor is out of warrenty. If you have an extended warrenty i pretty sure the EGR cooler is covered, the EGR valve itself is not, although Cummins told me if my EGR valve went bad again they would give me a break on the parts only. My understanding is to get a price break on the EGR valve you have to go to Cummins directly, not the truck dealer. My Ptb. dealer said they could not give me the same deal. As far as the EGR valve i've heard you can buy them on Ebay for $450.00,other than that i don't know anything about them. Good Luck!
