Yes, this the best way without tearing everything apart to check for a leaking EGR cooler. The pipe he pulled off is where the air from the cooler mixes with the intake air. If the cooler was leaking there will be obvious signs here. Mostly black slime from the coolant leaking with the carbon.

well it would appear that this truck for whatever reason now wishes to run at a low cooolant level. Back to work last night ,level was down below sensor again. filled bottle halfway between min and max . 3 hours later and an up to temp engine, bottle sits a min cold level. Head scratcher for sure.??????

i still think it's the egr cooler it's doing the same thing mine did two new caps and no one could find the leak until i had white smoke out the stack. took 35,000 miles to blow enough for them to fine it

I would go to Cummins, not authorized cummins, not Kw,Ptb,Int'l,Volvo, your local Cummins Dealer. Tell them what you are telling us. I'd start a log with dates, milelage, how much glycol you put in. Plus who and when you asked for help. Call Cummins 1-800 Diesels and #####,tell 800 Diesels no one will listen to you. I'm assumming you are still under warrenty,if not forget 800 Diesels. When you call Cummins they will want your Eng. Serial no. & probably the milage. Good Luck!

If you can't visibly see any coolant under the truck at any time when you park it you should suspect the egr cooler. They changed suppliers from 2009 to 2010 so that would explain the non-egr failures of the 2010 products. I saw one truck that was drinking 1 gallon an hour. It was spitting coolant out of the turbo. With the new after treatment systems on these trucks you can not go around back and look for white smoke. I have seen my fair share of bad egr coolers. If you still have problems you can disconect the exhaust at the turbo outlet before it gets to the DPF doser housing that is bolted onto the turbo. If you run the engine look for white smoke or coolant coming out of the engine. If you do you either have a blown head gasket of failed egr cooler. It may only happen when the engine is at operating temp so when you take it in and they look at everything cool tell them to try it when the engine is hot. Hope this helps.
