agree that would be hard on the auto. i think you will go thru clutches in the auto pretty quickly, doing that type of work.

I was cruising down 285 in ATL and when I hit the I20 WB on ramp, my tranny wouldn't downshift. I dropped it to manual; nothing...so it lugged up the ramp, the CA code popped up, and it stalled. In traffic. Would not start. Called a wrecker, unhooked the load, rocked it back and forth, let it sit, prayed, closed my eyes, and...nothing. Won't start, out of air. Had to leave trailer on the on ramp, blue lights showed up...bad scene. Truck was towed: my question is this: 3 of the 4 batteries were bad/dead. The truck would barely start that morning. Would this prevent the tranny from shifting? Should fresh batteries and a reset enable it to 'find nuetral'? This sucks. I have NEVER been stuck in traffic, especially not in a 2010 KW with less than 150K on it. Any ideas/advice? The shop has the truck, but I don't think they know what to do. They just want to order parts and charge labor. Their computer can't find any faults...give me back my 18 speed any day. If it aint broke, why fix it? That driver that said these trannies can't handle real world driving was right on. That was what I was thinking the first time I drove this truck....

You have to have perfect voltage and perfect air pressure for them to work right. There is a electrical connector that goes into the firewall. This has been known to get corroded and cause problems. It's usually something simple. I've never heard of a major failure. I have heard of expensive repairs, only because the shops don't know what they are doing, but charge for it anyways.

my company has a fleet of Macks, all the 10spd Auto shifts, all but one with over 450K miles. Mine is the newest of the fleet. The older trucks, the power wire for the autoshift comes direct from the battery. The issue your complaining about is a known problem with no direct solution except to take your power direct from the battery. My '09, we haven't touched the wiring and I haven't had this problem.

I have a 2001 Freightliner Century eaton fuller 10sp Auto that has been misbehaving lately! Whenever I am driving it there are times when it gets stuck in gear. Sometimes it happens daily sometimes it goes a few days without issues. When I am driving and get to 10th gear it sometimes gets stuck and starts flashing an "F" and will not downshift. Lately it's happening in ALL GEARS even Neutral!! When it's stuck in gear I pull over and let it sit for a while then the truck will reset and it will start and drive fine for a while. Other times it gets stuck and won't reset even after disconnecting the batteries!! When it does finally crank again it is stuck in neutral flashing an "F". This truck has had me stuck on the side of the road for hours simply frustrating!!! I have had to be towed three times!! I have only allowed Freightliner dealers work on the vehicle and so far they are clueless as well!! Memphis Freightliner replaced the transmission shift controller thinking that would fix the problem and I drove 70 miles and it happened again! Charlotte Freightliner replaced the x-y shifter, oem harness, transmission harness and two batteries and I drove 281 miles and it happened again! Kansas City Freightliner has replaced the ground harness and it's still happening!! Anyone out there have any idea what needs to be done to fix the problem? I have searched several forums and the entire internet with no luck! I see that several truckers have had this issue posted but didn't say how they fixed it.... HELP ME PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If it were me I would contact Eaton and get a hold of the rep. for your area when you get home. Those auto shifts have been out long enough that they should have those issues figured out by now. Getting stuck changing gears makes me think maybe something to do with air supply, maybe.

The flashing "F" simply means it has detected a component fault. There should be more specific codes logged in the TCU. Did anyone tell you what they were? If not, you can get the codes out by flash codes. To get them out you turn the key on, but do not start the engine. Let the trans finish it's start up sequence then turn the key off, turn the key on two times within 5 seconds ending with the key on to start the active flash codes. If there are no active codes logged it will flash code 25. To retrieve inactive codes it is the same deal but you key off and back on 4 times within 5 seconds. If there are no inactive codes it will flash 25 also.

    larry2903 Thanks this.
