I tried this and ended up with an exhaust leak in the EGR pipe. The EGR pipe is actually in three pieces and has a small rubber hose that holds the pipes together. Mine built up so much pressure that it began leaking threw the hose just before the intake (where the EGR hose hooks to the intake). If you unplug the EGR as mentioned above the engine will cut down your horsepower and turbo boost. Best way is to reprogram the ECM to remove the EGR (PDI or the people in Canada - $1700) and buy a rear section of exhaust manifold and put it on the front Completely eliminating the EGR's connection to the engine. Then it would be a good idea cut the EGR pipe out of the intake and block it off there just so the engine breaths better.
ISX Cummins running crappy...I think ?

First of all...egr systems were designed for emission standards and from what i have been told they do help a little on fuel mileage. The problem people have with them is when the ecm detects a fault in the egr system and it will derate the engine and cause low power...normally due to a stuck open or closed valve. The turbo actuator will be held open for the engine to perform the derate, and that is where the "low boost" complaint comes from. It seems everybody is complaining about the egr and aftertreatment systems causing a bunch of problems and blaiming it on the engine manufacturers. Start blaming all of this on tree-huggers. And just to let everyone know about the whole "blocking off the egr system" procedure...it is very illegal. We have had a couple of trucks where people have disconnected them and just ignored the check engine light. We wouldn't even work on them. We made the customers come in the shop, plug it back up, and go back in the lounge before we even laid hands on it. We were not even allowed to plug it back up ourself. There is a very big fine for that. I'll compare it to killing a "protected" animal. So be warned....

EPA gave to engine manufacturers 4 years to pass from one system to another which is really irresponsible and idiotic , a law in AL Capone style and the result is financially catastrophic and very risky for us the owner operator , earth is here since millions of years and will be here for millions more and this is a fact , considering this fact the delay should be at least 20 years between EPA cycles in order for engine manufacturers time to build really reliable systems , only mentally reduced people can't understand this.
A friend of mine (not the only one) had an EGR Cooler failure ,big crack on cooler and result was engine lockup , total cost was 18000$ on repairs . PROTECTED ANIMAL ????? ,....i care more about my son and my family and having food on table than about your crap irresponsible EPA LAWS . About your shop !!... i will never repair my truck in such place and hopefully all OO will do the same so in the future maybe you will be the one not having to put food on table for your family. -
+1 on the EGR causing an engine derate

I don't see any de-rate with my EGR unplugged. The only thing it causes is an elec fault code that scrolls when I start it up (like my light module code from my LED tails). I'd like to see some more input from drivers with more than 3 posts on here. I'm not buying a $4000 ECM reprogram to correct a fault code (and blow my chances with Cummins working on my engine).
As far as mpg goes, my EGR system has been tested and checks new - but I run at least .75mpg less than an 03 non-EGR. I was able to pull better mpg out of a friends 07 model (mine's an 05) with the same truck specs - maybe there's something more to that than just keeping an EGR valve working past 150k. -
I have a 05 ISX EGRs been unplugged for 8 months no trouble, no derate. Driver says it runs better unplugged. I dont drive it enough to know. It does not cost 4000 to get a reprogram, less than half. You will also get more than the EGR delete and Cummins will never know its there. I have not had a PDI tune put in the Cummins yet but if its anything like what they can do for the ACERT it will be well worth it.
HwyPilot Thanks this. -
