Is it possible for a fully loaded (75K to 80K gross) 5 axle tractor/trailer to get 10 MPG?
Anybody working on this here?
1998 Volvo 770
3406E Cat
13 speed Eaton tranny in 12th gear 1325 rpm # 57 mph mostly
3.36 rear end gears
Pittsburgh Power Box level 1 mostly
Pittsburgh Power turbo and exhaust manifold with turbo blanket and exhaust wrap
Pittsburgh Power Crankshaft dampner and balancer
FASS
Walker MegaFlow Mufflers
Fleet Air Filter
Bridgestone M720 fuel saver drive tires 11R 22.5
Continental HRS2 16 ply steer tires 11R 22.5
Mobil One 5W40 Synthetic Motor Oil
Walmart 2 cycle oil added around 150:1 to fuel
I averaged 8.18 mpg range on my dedicated stuff during June and just started working on coated metal bearing surfaces and have Airtabs and Deflecktor wheel covers for the tractor ordered.
Currently testing MicroBlue Racing Treated Wheel Bearings and hope to try MicroBlue polishing and coating the rear end bearings, pinion gears and drive shaft u-joints that I believe there is around 1-1/2 mpg to 2 mpg to be gained total with the entire drive train treated that could put me close to or over the 10 MPG range. Test results coming soon.
I don't own the trailers I pull and I am stuck with an un-aerodynamic 48' dry van that does have a small nose cone on it.
Please post more things to try or results of what you have found that works???

are you considering to get some advanced things like 2speed air compressor or 2speed steering wheel pump
super singles?
here
now new mb actros have 9.5mpg always loaded with 88300lbs
scania have their own transport company and all fleet have 9+mpg always fully loaded , and even with some small tires with huge roll resistance and high cab and trailer higher than normal for 4inch
mercedes with its last model before 5years make world record with fully loaded truck they get 12.5mpg -
http://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/adjudications/080609_Most_fuel_efficient_truck.aspx
From 28 to 30 May 2008, Guinness World Records adjudicator Kristian Teufel was in Nardo, Italy to verify the record for the most fuel efficient truck.
The attempt was organized by the Daimler AG Truck division from Germany and took place at the Nardo Technical Centre, a testing facility for prototype cars with a 12 km (7.46 mile) circle track.
On this track, the truck, a fully loaded 40-ton, Mercedes Benz Actros, was driven in both directions for an entire week, starting on 22 of May for 24 hours a day. During this time, it stopped only to refuel, change drivers and change driving direction. The test was monitored at all times by DEKRA, an independent testing firm for trucks.
On 29 May, one week and 12,728 km (7,908.8 miles) later, the average fuel consumption of the fully loaded truck was established as being 19,44 litres per 100 km (6.88 gal per 100 miles). This is an impressive result, as most of the attending specialists estimated that other trucks under the same conditions would use between 25 and 30 litres (5.5 and 6.6 gal) average.
The Daimler engineers also pointed out that this result meant that in the field of trucks the much discussed "one litre car" was already a reality looking at the average consumption of fuel per ton on 100 km.
In American this is 12,1 mpg at just over 88 000lbs. -
Keep it coming. This is good stuff.
Let's also hear what you guys are doing for better fuel mileage too?
I know the truck manufactuers on closed courses with controlled surfaces and conditions can get way better than us with resources in material and funding we don't have access to. -
this mercedes did is possible to get by any other manufuacture and this is more like to propaganda especially this when they said that other trucks will made 25-30L
i just look at one truck magazine they tested payload optimised man tga TS which have in real life fuel consumption 11.32mpg on highway and this is non scr engine mercedes use scr engine which have another 3% better fuel economy
and MAN is not very famous for fuel economy
do you maybe considering to use 6x2?
it can save some fuel
try to have services more frequently ( especially wheel alignment) if you still dont have , buy some TPM it also can save fuel
go on economy school for drivers
results from here say TPM can save 5% of fuel
trained driver up to 10%
automated gearbox 10%

You cant approximate real life conditions on a closed course and expect it to be the same. Just doesnt add up. I'm everything built for this was one of, just for testing purposesSumothertrucker Thanks this. -
Reading this MPG thread and drooling. 4.8 here and think im doing "good". Go off road alot and always heavy.
I put some effort into mpg's. Minimal idling, somwhat easy with the right pedal, etc, but still 4.8....
Have chatted with Mr. Haney and will someday have him perform his magic on my ECM. -
Euro trucks have a flat front, but they use less fuel than a american truck with a nose.
And american truck builders have much more lenght to work with, to make the aerodymanic better. That's pretty stranges for me.
But that lonestar truck is a good way to do better MPG. And maybe it helps to have side skirts on the truck/trailer. -
i talked to an o/o last week he has a 600hp cat 18spd with a split rear (23 spd) says he gets 10.5. At hwy speed he is idleing at 75mp
