Buy remanufactured engine or do in-frame/out of frame?

    Would it be better(and faster) to get a remanufactured engine and simply replace it vs. "getting an in-frame/out of frame done?"

    what engine? what do you want to be changed? pistons/sleeves, bearings? ore cyl. head full rebuild?

    Anyway to change engine with remanufacted is more expencive, but saves time.

    We are seeing this more often now with customer wanting to extend the life of their pre egr trucks. I recommend complete engine replacement versus a rebuild. A replacement engine is more expensive, but what you get in return far out weighs that price. Every seal, gasket, bushing and bearing will be new. You get new turbo, wp, coolers, oil pump, complete engine wiring harness and sensors and so on... Plus a complete warranty!

    When I do a rebuild I do the inspection of the crank and main bearing caps first if there is a problem that needs a replacement engine that will be the area, unless of course it is windowed.
    You want to do a lot of looking, and pricing when it comes to a rebuild. I have done thousands of rebuilds and would recommend a replacement to anyone that has a high mileage core.
    A friend got an N14 replaced complete with Jake's at a lot less than I could have rebuilt his old one and he got a brand new engine. I believe he got it done in Portland.
    I have done engines because the customer thought he had a good one. It is a piece of metal, not an object that cares about you.

    Really???? how old are you???:biggrin_25525:. An inframe is typically 40 hours of labour so basically 1 week for the guy working an 8 hour day. If you ONLY rebuild engines, 8 hours a day, 5 days a week with no days off it would take 19 years to do 1000 of them.Even if your really good and can knock 'em out in 30 hours it would still take 14 years to do 1000.... and you've done THOUSANDS (plural?):biggrin_2554:.     Since the idea of a remanned engine has come up, does anyone know if a Cummins ISX recon engine come with an ECM, or is the one from the previous engine used?

    I would think that you would keep your ecm, I don't know for certain but that is my guess.

    if engines are of different CPLs use ECM you got with engine, becouse calibration may differ.

    But do parameterization for your truck, read parameterf from you ECM with Insite and change parameters in your new ECM.

    I got my licence in 1973 and worked at an engine dealership in 1975, retired in June 14 2007, and yes I have done thousands. I worked three twelves, 8:30 to 8:30 . 31.5 hours actual work and could do any engine in that time.

    We just changed an ISX, it came with a new ECM.
