My 99 d12 seems to run out of fuel or lose it's prime, mostly when shifting gears when the RPMs go up and down. Does a 99 volvo have a lift pump or where should I start looking, where is the main pump on this engine?

what is the fuel pressure? you can check it with VCADs software ore with gauge. It is normal over 1.8 BAR at idle.

if lower - change fuel delivering pump

May I suggest it is a loose ECM power wire(s) to the battery posts? The sympton is just like what you describe. Check the two separated tiny wires that connect to the battery posts. When it started to come loose your engine will start to miss wheneve you hit a bump on the road. It happened to both of my 98 and 05.

All volvo ECMs are not power supplied from battery box!

D12C control unit is supplied with ign. power (to supply processor board) and there is power relay in fuse box controlled with ECM (+12V to voltage converter and power MOSFETs). If voltage is lower 10.5V ECM stores fault codes.

So.... IMO, there is fuel delivery issue!

My fuel feeds from the bottom of both tanks, all batt. connections are good, where is the delevering pump located? And would the pump come and go or is it gear driven? The truck idles good and if it sets 24 hours some time it will start and sometime has to be primed. tanks are full and no visable leaks, it's driving me nuts!

look for bleeding port on head, it is used for fuel pressure testing too.

Hard start may be related with check valves, but '99 is an old engine and seems to me pump is bad.

On picture the typical system is shown, filter configuration may differ. Electric priming pump is option and may be it is not installed on your engine, like water in fuel separator and electrically heating lines and filter.

Anyway all check valves shown are used.
