These "codes" refer to the first three digits of a Caterpillar engine's serial number, and are related to which generation the engine belongs to. ie: 6NZ/7CZ being a pre-emissions single turbo Cat (and generally the best performing), MBN being a so-called "bridge" single turbo Cat (know to be a sluggish performer but easily programmable through the ecm to 6NZ specs), and finally, MXS/BXS, belonging to the twin turbo Acert family.
Socal Xpress, RockinChair and dieselpowerrules Thank this. -
It's the first 3 digits in the serial number. Last year Cat made em was about 2003.
dieselpowerrules Thanks this. -
It is a serial number prefix that cat used to identify a series of engines, the 6NZ is the last good single turbo C15, anything after that and your looking at probems created by updated programming and changes in parts used to meet emmissions.
I believe the build order go something like this, 5EK, 6TS, 1LW, 2WS, 6NZ, and MBN for the single turbo CATs, the first four are considered E models and the last two are C15s.
The large cube motors go from 5DS, 1MM, and 7CZ, these are higher displacment engine and mostly rated at 600hp with some being 575hp. Also the first two are E models and the last is a C16.
Hope that clears some things up for you.Ericfrancs101, ralphbohm, RockinChair and 2 others Thank this. -
And the E models were part of the 3406 family correct?

Correct 10-4or

The 6NZ is basically a 3406E with some minor upgrades. The electronic are different to allow the engine to communicate with other features that could be installed as options to the truck, AutoShift tranny is one that comes to mind. The other big difference is how the gaskets seal the engine and the reason the C-15/C-16's don't have the oil leaks the earlier 3406E's do. The block is a sculpted block to reduce weight and increase strength.

Is it true that the twin turbo Cats are any less reliable than a single turbo? I've heard guys that avoid them like the plague, but I drove one once and really liked the performance.
Ericfrancs101 Thanks this. -
That's the opinion of most probably due to how they had a few bugs early on. I believed it myself until I found this forum and got educated. There's a lot of good info on here about "twin turbo" accerts.they can easily be tuned into the best pulling motor on the road. Check out all the cat threads here especially the " cat power harness" one..
Ericfrancs101 and Cetane+ Thank this. -
Now what exactly is the Accert? What makes them different? Sorry for bumping this thread, but Im really interested in Cat engines!
Ericfrancs101 Thanks this.
