Volvo Boiling batteries?

    Any one ever have a problem with Volvos with a Detroit boiling batteries? Sets off all the bells and whistles and shuts the truck down. Is it just me?

    It sounds like your alternator may be over charging the batteries. You need to get it checked.

    what is the voltage? over 15V? it is typical voltage regulator failure....

    Throwing out a possibility here......The company I'm with had this problem with the new international prostars. Took the truck to the dealer for this same problem. Seems the factory was tightening down the brackets on the batteries, too much.

    It is most likely a bad battery. Heat kills batteries more than cold does. A bad battery can cause an alternator to over-charge. Another thing to consider. If the batteries have any age at all, replace all of them. Older batteries require more current to recharge and will overcharge a new battery.

    I usually try to change all my batteries at the same time, at least if I have had them for a while.

    I've had mine boil a few batteries, didn't shut the truck down though, just swelled them and made them spew stinky steam until I replaced...The smell is the tell!

    Just do like Pablo said. If it's over 14.5V it's overcharging. The batteries boiling it's more than that. A voltage regulator that's working will keep it between 13.5 and 14.5V.

    Fix ASAP as an overcharging system can damage your electronics. Then you'll have more repairs.
